Mr. Schaefer was born in Cut Bank, Montana, a small town near the Blackfoot Indian reservation. He attended Saint Norbert high school in De Pere, Wisconsin, a boarding school for boys. He talks about high school in his book, Cruising through The Teens, Easier Than It Seems. He readily admits that high school was not easy for him, but he now sees that it can be if teens have a better understanding of themselves. After high school, he joined the Norbertine Order, studying to become a priest. After four years he decided not to pursue that particular path. In 1979 he moved from Wisconsin to Long Beach, California. He had divorced from his first wife a few years earlier. He taught for Los Angeles unified school district, retiring in the year 2000. He has two children from his first marriage and four grandchildren. His second wife died from Alzheimer's in 2018. He looks on the bright potential that human beings have on this planet. His most recent book, Isn't It Kind of Funny That...? is evidence of this position. In the book he wonders "why arn't we living in paradise," since there is plenty of resources available for everyone to have what they need? Mr. Schaefer enjoys traveling. Before traveling became restricted, he spent a month in Europe and three weeks in Australia. One of his favorite activities while visiting a new country is going to the local discos and dancing. He enjoys dancing, reveling in the camaraderie and joy of others. He believes joy to be the fundamental experience and expression of being a human being.
