Jim Bernhard acquired (by somewhat questionable means) an M.A. in English literature from England's University of Birmingham, where he was a Marshall Scholar and world-class flâneur, and a B.A. allegedly in history, summa cum laude, from Rice University in Houston. An inadvertent member of Phi Beta Kappa, he has pursued (though never actually caught) numerous improbable careers including those of author, playwright, lyricist, actor, newspaperman, college English teacher, theatrical producer, artistic director, concert impresario, television host, direct mail advertiser, bistro chanteur, and puzzle constructor. Bernhard was the disgruntled runner-up in the 1950 National Spelling Bee (missing the word haruspex). His blog about words is at WordsGoingWild.blogspot.com. He also blogs about dead authors at DeadAuthorsSociety.blogspot.com. His website can be endured at JimBernhardAuthor.com. He is purportedly the author of more books than necessary, including Words Over Easy: Damn the Apostrophes--Full Speed Ahead; Tiny Troupers: Famous Child Stars and What Became of Them; 'Somebody Peenched My Het!': Backstage Gossip by An Indiscreet Impresario; You're On!: The Theatre Quiz Book ("too much fun!"); Final Chapters: How Famous Authors Died ("insightful and hilarious"); Puns, Puzzles, and Word Play (a second edition of Words Gone Wild, intended to induce people to unwittingly buy it twice); Porcupine, Picayune, & Post: How Newspapers Get Their Names; Stars In Your Eyes: A Pictorial History of Theatre Under The Stars; and with his wife, Virginia, Life Is NOT A Dress Rehearsal: 10 Lists to Make Before Your Final Exit--all of which have been inexplicably overlooked for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. They are, however, readily available for purchase at Amazon.com and certain other arcane locales. Bernhard is quick to point out that his latest book, Words Over Easy, is climbing rapidly on the best-seller lists, although he does not say in which direction. Bernhard and his wife, a professor emerita at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, live haphazardly in Houston, where they raised three children who must surely be grownups by now.
