John has delivered medical aid to orphanages and hospitals across the globe, including Romania during the revolution and South America, Bosnia during the war and now to the Ukraine. His autobiography, The Benevolence of Rogues, tells of the characters he encountered during his many dangerous missions, when he enlisted unlikely support from those he calls 'benevolent rogues'. These men and women used their wit and guile to deliver medical aid and help save lives. He has written The Rogues Trilogy; rousing 1930s epic adventures set in the two years leading up to WWII. Beginning with 'Churchill's Rogue, followed by 'The Gathering Storm' and 'The Darkest Hour'. Then he wrote the 1960s based adventure thrillers, The Lochran Trilogy: 'Churchill's Assassin'; 'The Last Rogue' and 'The Alpha Wolves', based on an assassination attempt on Sir Winston Churchill - a man who the world knows is already dying. John followed this with The Lenka Trilogy, 1990s thrillers centred on a young school teacher who volunteers to deliver aid to children’s orphanages in Romania and later to Bosnia during the war, who finds herself in the company of rogues and the target of mercenaries. The first in the series, 'Heartbreak', was followed by 'Resilience', and 'Reflection'. John's latest novel, The Englander, is a stand-alone novel in the Rogues series, and was shortlisted for the prestigious Killer Nashville Claymore Award. His final novel, 'The Englander - Death Sentence' is set for release next year. John has written a short, humorous play, 'The "Pane" (please note, the misspelling is deliberate) of Rejection', based on a fictitious interview between a wry author and an acerbic critic. John has worked in over forty occupations, ranging from grave digger, cocktail barman and tree-surgeon, to professional poker player and is currently employed as a government ‘Transactor’ covering major infrastructure programmes across the country. His adventures continue, as he has ridden a British Army motorbike across India to support several children's charities and worked in a mental health facility in Manhattan. These experiences, along with his convoy days, are part of his outrageous auto-biography, 'The Benevolence of Rogues'. In 2016, 'Churchill's Rogue' was nominated for the prestigious inaugural Wilbur Smith Adventure Best Newcomer Award, and in 2020 'Heartbreak' won the Page Turner Spectrum Audio award. What the critics said: The Hampstead & Highgate Express Arts Review (UK): 'The Benevolence of Rogues': "Righten has been in the wrong place at the right time since the 1980s." Kirkus Indie (US): 'The Benevolence of Rogues': "A roguishly charming memoir." Amazon review (UK): The "Pane" of Rejection', "A Pinter-esque meander through the intimate world of writer and critic." The Bookbag (UK): 'Churchill's Rogue', "Righten adds rugged, scream-curdling realism and a pace that would render Jack Reacher an asthmatic wreck." Amazon review (UK): 'Churchill Assassin', "Fleming's successor!" IndieReader: 'Churchill's Assassin', "Your book was judged by top industry professionals—not as merely a great indie book—but as great book, period." Self-Publishing Review (US): "'Heartbreak' is both thrilling and poignant." The Independent Review of Books (US): 'Heartbreak', "Reminiscent of Hemingway." Readers Favorite awarded 'The Englander' its prestigious 5 star seal. Readers Favorite, editorial review. "The plot of The Englander by John Righten is masterfully crafted. I could not put the book down because of how quickly the plot advanced with all its twists and turns. I was engrossed in the story from the beginning and found myself guessing until the end. I was kept on the edge of my seat with just the appropriate amount of intrigue and tension. There was never a dull moment, and I could not turn the pages fast enough. The characters were well-developed and authentic. Connor was devastated by his fiancée and daughter's passing and was set on bringing the Wolves down. Connor was a formidable enemy because his exceptional military expertise made him an expert and competent killer. This book is well-written and an exciting read. It exceeded my expectations by far."
