Jon Michaels is a tenured law professor at UCLA, where he specializes in constitutional law, public administration, national security law, and the law of democracy. Jon's award-winning scholarship has been published in the Yale Law Journal, the University of Chicago Law Review, the Columbia Law Review, and the Harvard Law Review. His popular essays have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Foreign Affairs, Guardian, CNN, Slate, Time, the American Prospect, and the Forward. A former clerk to Justice David H. Souter of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge Guido Calabresi of the U.S. Court of Appeals, Jon regularly consults with government officials, lectures across the country, and provides expert commentary for major media outlets. Jon’s book on presidential power—CONSTITUTIONAL COUP—was published in 2017 (Harvard University Press). His book on surging rightwing political violence—VIGILANTE NATION—is slated for publication this October (Simon & Schuster/One Signal). Jon is a member of the American Law Institute, serves on the advisory board of UCLA’s Safeguarding Democracy Project, and is a faculty affiliate of UCLA’s Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy. He hold degrees from Williams College, the University of Oxford (Marshall Scholar), and Yale Law School.
