Joseph Gary Crance was born in Upstate New York near his hometown of Painted Post. As a youth, Joe spent hundreds of nights with his father, a New York State Forest Ranger, and their coonhounds chasing raccoon through the hills of this scenic land. After a career in the U.S. Air Force, Joe returned to Painted Post with his family and back to the swamps and woodland hollows of his youth to again listen to the nighttime songs of his hounds in pursuit of the wily ringtail. Admittedly, he doesn't climb these unchanging hills as fast as he once did. But that's okay. His hounds and old oaks have a great deal of patience. Two of his novels, The Forest Ghost and The Master of Hounds: Book IV of the Ryland Creek saga, won First and Second place (book category), respectively, in New York State Outdoor Writers Association's (NYSOWA) 2021 Excellence in Craft (EIC) awards. The Last Coon Hunter, Fifth Anniversary Ed., won Second Place in NYSOWA's 2023 EIC Awards (book category). His first novel turned into audiobook format, The Last Coon Hunter: Book I of the Ryland Creek Saga, Fifth Anniversary Edition, won Second Place in NYSOWA's 2022 EIC Awards (Television, Radio, Video, and Audio category). His second novel in audiobook format, An Exceptional Hound, won First Place in NYSOWA's 2024 EIC Awards (Television, Radio, Video, and Audio category). Mr. Crance is a proud member of the New York State Outdoor Writers Association and holds a degree in Professional Writing from Mansfield University.
