Karen Ergus knows the power of energy, drive, enthusiasm – and a smile. With years of experience in the dental industry, Karen has worked as a hygienist, in practice management, and as legal counsel in the field of dentistry. After training as a dental hygienist, Karen worked in a private practice for a number of years. During this time, her management noticed Karen’s business acuity and strong interpersonal skills, above and beyond her dental knowledge and ease with her patients. Karen found that the business side of dentistry interested her and allowed her an opportunity to grow her skill set and challenge herself to learn new things. She spent a number of years as the Director of Operations at the practice, a role that allowed her to work on, in addition to operations, community engagement, mediation, policy development, and staff training. After a wonderful career with Vincent Health Services, Karen was ready for a new challenge. She returned to school and obtained a JD from the University of Ottawa, with a concentration in dispute resolution and professionalism, and was called to the bar in September 2016. After stints in the Ontario Crown Attorney Office and as in-house counsel for Hill Kindy Practice Sales and Realty, and then as External Counsel with P&G, Karen launched her consulting business, assisting dentists with the legal, operational, and strategic elements of their practice. This has allowed her to showcase her outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, as she works with dentists to guide them towards creating the practice they have always dreamed of having. Even as she began to take on new challenges, Karen maintained a strong connection to one of the core themes that has been a constant throughout her career: working to promote dental health for all. Dental health, which is often neglected, is a vitally important part of whole-body health, and Karen has worked in a professional capacity with First Nations dental health, and has been involved in a volunteer capacity with the Sparkle Dental Charity Ball. Throughout her career, Karen has maintained a connection, and commitment with, her community, from the local to the national level. She worked to include community connection opportunities in her role as Director of Operations at Vincent Health Services and is an active volunteer with community organizations. Outside of her professional and volunteer activities, Karen enjoys music, film, and the arts, including makeup artistry.
