Laura Hunter (1942) was born near Cordova, Alabama to working-class parents, grew up in rural Walker County, and moved to the Tuscaloosa area in 1963. A former English instructor, Hunter taught composition and American literature to gifted students, primarily for Tuscaloosa City Schools, for more than 30 years, and the University of Alabama for seven. During her teaching career, she was one of two academic coaches at Central High School East Campus, Tuscaloosa. During her tenure, the team won 17 State Championships and 3 National Championships. Hunter has published 16 award-winning fiction pieces, nine poems, and numerous free-lance articles. Her studies in creative writing and journalism include these published authors: Lex Williford, UTEP; Michael Knight, University of TN; Aaron Smith, Leslie University, MA; Crystal Wilkinson, UK; Darnell Arnoult, Lincoln Memorial University, TN; Michael Martone, University of AL; and Rick Bragg, University of AL. The magical realism novel BELOVED MOTHER, set in the early to mid-20th century Appalachians, is currently available for purchase. She also has completed a collection of short stories built around the fictional community of Copeland’s Crossing, Alabama. Her work in progress is a novel based on actual experiments used to sterilize young Black females in mid-20th century Alabama. Hunter currently lives in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, with her husband and Partz-mix spaniel Oreo Princess.
