Libby Peyton began her life journey on an academic track, earning top honors in high school and receiving an excellent liberal arts education, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude. Seeking an expanded worldview, she spent her junior year in Japan and later taught English there. Although she entered graduate school on a sociology fellowship that recognized her facility with Japanese, her PhD studies were interrupted by a divorce, an experience of sexual harassment and the devastating onset of schizophrenia. She carried this burden secretly, engaged in a life-and-death struggle to keep body and soul together. Her decades-long effort to emerge from this disorder forms the basis for this book, The Thin Ice of Reality. Now in recovery, she is shining a light on the paucity of knowledge about mental illness and is working to help others who are dealt this hand in life. Libby loves to read fiction (especially British mysteries and novels translated from Japanese) as well as works on mental health. She is a sporadic hiker and practices photography. She is learning to edit her photos and loves to take pictures of the offerings of mother nature. Her little garden is an immense source of joy. She has an abiding interest in local and national politics, which sometimes lands her in hot water.
