I believe reading, like writing, is a fundamental human good. When I was younger, I used writing as a form of escapism. I wasn’t a good student, but I had a great imagination. Every time I write a short story or a short novel, I do so to give back a piece of my imagination to others. My goal as a part-time author, is to write, publish, narrate and illustrate about 1-2 short stories and 1 book per year. My inspiration for writing was birthed from an unintentional flattering moment in elementary school. My second-grade teacher read one of my stories, which I also illustrated. This story was called “The Blob.” The Blob was a simple story of a sack lunch which mutated into monster that ate people. I thought it was a hilarious juxtaposition, you know, having your lunch eat you and not the other way around. Basically, the sandwich sat at the bottom of my backpack for a year and then mutated into the Blob. I had the terrible habit of leaving my sack lunches in my backpack and forgetting to eat them. Many of which became moldy and unsightly to look at. The story itself wasn’t that sophisticated, but I had a good time writing and illustrating it. My teacher however, did not believe I wrote the story. She had no doubt that I illustrated the story, because I was always doodling and goofing off in class. Needless to say, I had attention issues and was about as rambunctious as a Tasmania Devil. She asked for my Mother’s phone number so she could call my mother and talk about the story. When I asked her why she thought I didn’t write the story, she responded by saying, “I know you didn’t write this.” When I pressed her further, she said, “I know your writing. And I know you didn’t write this story.” Apparently, she knew my writing about as well as she knew Italian mothers, which is to say not very well. She called my mother and received an earful from my mother. She accused my mother of writing the story and explained that this writing was “Too Good” for me. Which given my scholastic performance at the time might have been an accurate assumption on behalf of the teacher. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt. Anyways, eventually she apologized and then encouraged me to pursue writing as I showed some promise. I did, but only for about ten years. I took a ten-year hiatus from writing, that is until I witnessed the miracle of childbirth. After my daughter was born, my life changed completely. I decided to pick up the pen and write my heart out. I even wrote her as a villain into one of my books. One day, I hope to read these books to her and maybe she will even give writing a chance. As I continue my writing journey, I would greatly appreciate your feedback to help me become a better author. I hope you enjoy my work.
