M R Cates is a physicist by training and a writer by compulsion. Because it's so natural for him, and so important to our times, he often puts some science into his fiction, hopefully adding a little tingle of excitement and encouraging the reader to get caught up in some possible flow of our rapidly changing technological society. Cates is active in his area writers group, the Tennessee Mountain Writers, a special organization of souls molded by the hills, streams, and forests of one of the world's most beautiful areas. There are so many books written in a kind of formulaic style, and admittedly there are also many readers who want just that in their reading matter; but Cates marches, as it were, to a different drummer. And the drummer changes his beat from book to book. His writing goal is well expressed by one of the reviews of his first book, The Asteroid. The reviewer said "Many books I read are interesting or funny or exciting--only a few will cause me to try and relate the story to life and cause me to return to the story long after I have finished the book. Some authors come to mind who do that for me--Neal Stephenson, Ayn Rand, and Jared Diamond. I think the list puts M R Cates in very good company."
