Winn and Linda grew up within several blocks of each other. It was not until they entered high school that they became friends. Winn dated Linda a few times during his senior year. Following 30 months of church-centered service, he returned home and began to actively date Linda. A little more than a year later, they were married. Now at 50-plus years of marriage, they have four married children, one son and three daughters (Daniel and Kristin, Amy Dott and Scott, Mary Ann and Ryan, as well as Marcia and David). They have given Winn and Linda 22 grandchildren. From Winn: I grew up as the eldest in a family of eleven children—seven boys and four girls. My mother and father were remarkable parents and grandparents. For most of our married lives, Linda and I lived next door to them—a mere twenty feet from their front door. We loved living near them. As grandparents, they profoundly blessed the lives of our children. They also provided excellent examples of what it meant to be purposeful grandparents. I have been a professional educator all my life. I have had the privilege of teaching children and youth of all ages—preschool through graduate school. I have also had the privilege of working with children and youth with disabilities. Early in 2019, Linda, my dear and loving companion passed away from complications of several chronic health conditions. We sorely miss her matchless light and love. From the very outset of our grandparenting, Linda and I focused our best efforts on building and sustaining loving relationships with each grandchild and their parents. Then we attempted to be very purposeful and deliberate in responding to their needs and challenges in concert with their parents. Grandparenting on Purpose book chronicles our best efforts to be caring and purpose-driven grandparents. Because we all come to grandparenting with widely diverse backgrounds, experiences, and preparations, it is impossible to prepare a book that speaks entirely and individually to each grandparent’s needs. This said we believe the consistent application of the grounding principles presented in the book will contribute significantly to your grandchildren's happiness. Our book presents our very best, family-tested traditions, routines, and family themes. We hope the ideas will serve as springboards for your own purposeful family activities and events. If you want to grow as a grandparent, this book is designed for you. Finally, we are committed to a long-term relationship with you. We have created a website, grandparentingonpurpose.com, where we will continue to share helpful ideas and practices that emanate from you and other grandparents. We want to know about your triumphs and your challenges. Please let us hear from you. This website will be a place where you can pose questions, share your experiences, and look for new ideas, routines, and traditions.
