Dr. Lloyd Sederer is an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University School of Public Health. He served for 12 years as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the NYS Office of Mental Health, the nation’s largest state mental health system. He has been NYC’s Mental Health Commissioner, Medical Director/EVP of McLean Hospital (a Harvard teaching hospital), and Director of the Division of Clinical Services for the American Psychiatric Association (APA). He has led large scale, mental health disaster responses to 9/11 (Project Liberty) and Hurricane Sandy, as well as other smaller but no less tragic events. In 2013, Dr. Sederer was awarded the Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents by the APA, which in 2009 had recognized him as the Psychiatric Administrator of the Year. He also has been awarded a Scholar-in-Residence grant by the Rockefeller Foundation and an Exemplary Psychiatrist award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). In 2019, he received the Doctor of The Year award from The National Council on Behavioral Healthcare (representing over 3,000 mental health, addiction and social service organizations serving over 10 million patients). He has published 7 professional books and 6 books for lay audiences, as well as over 500 articles and audiovisual programs for medical journals and diverse lay media venues. He was for 7 years the Medical Editor for Mental Health for the Huff Post, wrote a regular opinion column for US News & World Report, and was a contributing writer for The Atlantic. He has published 100s of film, TV (streaming), book and theatre Reviews. Dr. Sederer taught medical writing for the lay public at Columbia Medical School, Department of Psychiatry, for 18 sequential semesters, and continues to teach a non-fiction writing workshop at the Columbia University School of Public Health. In 2019, Dr. Sederer founded Columbia Psychiatry Media, which produced expert videos for Medscape, a Resident/Fellow hosted podcast, a Columbia Psychiatry column for a national MH journal, and convenes conferences germane to mental health, the addictions, and social justice.
