Dr. Mari Swingle holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology, two MA’s (one in Psych. the other in Education) and a BA in fine arts. She is a winner of a prestigious Federation of Associations in Brain and Behavioral Sciences Foundation (FABBS) Early Career Impact Award (2015) "for her major research contributions to the sciences of mind, brain, and behavior” namely for her brain research presented in both editions of her seminal book i-Minds. Don’t let Dr. Mari Swingle’s credentials and scientific rigor scare you. In fact quite the opposite, Dr. Mari (as many of her patients call her) is infamous for her “unique ability to clearly communicate otherwise esoteric scientific information”...clearing the scientific fog helping parents, teachers, all of us, decipher the difference between the science and the hype of a very timely topic: The effects of screen based technologies and constant connectivity on our brains, our behavior and the culture(s) we live in. i-Minds is written for the general public: “meticulously researched” --and yet “completely accessible”. For those who want to go a bit deeper there are sections titled Scientific Corner that will give you a bit more of a bite –but that can easily be skipped without loss of content flow (if the hard-core stuff is not your thing)! Delivered with “humor and panache” & “sprinkled with vignettes” i-Minds is an “eye-opening read”. For more information on i-Minds and Dr. Mari Swingle go to drmariswingle.com … or just google her! Or read on… In interviews, Dr. Mari Swingle has been referred to as “the Dear Abby of i-Tech” for her “extensive practical knowledge” and her unique ability to deliver it clearly. Her passion for her work is evident as too is her concern. In her writing she extensively explores how we have embraced and assimilated technologies into all aspects of our lives without fully understanding their effects on our culture and our persons, our brains and our biology. She examines screen-based technology’s effects on attention, creativity and innovative process, personality alteration, mental & physical health and development. In the realm of mental health, she studies associations of excessive or inappropriate screen usage with hyper arousal, altered attachment, anxiety, depression, insomnia, emotional deregulation, sexuality and sexual dysfunction, addiction and the obsessive-compulsive spectrum…and politics, don’t forget politics! A current emphasis of her work regards the emergent effects of screen-based technology on children, the developing brain, and how technology is slowly but surely eclipsing our relationships with both the physical world (nature) and each other. In both her books and her lectures Dr. Mari speaks to the state of where we are and how we got here. Equally important, she opens dialogue on where we want to be in the future vis-à-vis our relationships with nature (AKA the physical world) and technology, what we can do as individuals and community to reintroduce balance; and how to ensure we remain masters not servants of the technologies we bequeath future generations. Her work (1st edition of i-Minds) was translated into Chinese in 2018 and is now available under the title “Hijacked” (劫持 / Jiéchí) Drmariswingle.com Mari is no stodgy Doctor! A multifaceted life feeds her intellect and her practice. Including living in a cabin in the woods in Southern Quebec (Canada) with no running water nor electricity, key influential years running in lavender fields and studying with nuns as a child in France, and a modeling career in Milan, Italy (after she had completed her BA at age 19!). She is passionate about art and nature, paints and sings, and is a fervent, albeit not exceedingly talented, skier. You are equally likely to find her writing obsessively at her desk as in a cow field, at a heavy metal concert or the symphony.
