Marina Richie is the author of Halcyon Journey: In Search of the Belted Kingfisher, winner of the 2024 Burroughs Medal for distinguished natural history writing; a 2022 National Outdoor Book Award; and a Foreword Indies award. A nature writer, Marina also authored two children's books: Bird Feats of Montana and Bug Feats of Montana, published by Farcountry Press. The Montana State Library chose Bug Feats of Montana as the single book representing the state at the 2009 National Book Festival in Washington, D. C. Her articles and essays appear in many publications, including National Wildlife, Birding, Montana Naturalist, Birdwatching Magazine, A.T. Journeys, Post Road, and Think Journal. Marina's essay on the kingfisher appears in the 2020 book, Placed: An Encyclopedia of Central Oregon. She writes a bi-monthly blog of prose and poetry. Marina resides in Bend, Oregon, with her husband Wes and Labrador Pepper. She holds a graduate degree in journalism from the University of Montana and an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Oregon. When not outside pursuing kingfishers and wild places, she writes from home with a view of their pollinator and bird-friendly front yard.
