MARTIN DUFFY Martin is an Irish filmmaker and writer living in Berlin. He has extensive experience as a film editor, writer, script analyst, and director. In February 2012 the non-fiction book JUSTICE FOR MY SON, which he co-wrote with his sister-in-law Vera Duffy, was published by Ireland's largest publishing house Gill and Macmillan and distributed by Ireland's largest book chain Eason's. His entertaining social history book THE TRADE UNION PINT about the trade unionising of the Guinness Brewery will be published by Liberties Press in July 2012. The book has received publication clearance from Diageo and so can bear the Guinness logo and include Guinness archive material. Later in 2012 his second family history book, THE CARRUTHERS ADVENTURE, will be published by Ogma Press. In 2006 his book about his parents and their Dublin working class lives, BARNEY AND MOLLY; A TRUE DUBLIN LOVE STORY, was published. He has often written for children and young people, including the novels MOTHERSHIP (also made as a radio series) and PEG LEG GUS. RADIO: Martin researches, records, edits and narrates his radio documentaries. He has completed NACH DEM ÜBERFALL for German national radio Deutschlandradio. It is the true account of his being stabbed while out for a walk in his neighbourhood in Berlin. Broadcast date is March 24th 2012. Also in March 2012, RTE (Irish national radio) broadcast his documentary CHECKING IN AT THE CENTRAL HOTEL. In 2010 he completed an RTE radio documentary about Tony Sheridan – a key man in the forming of The Beatles. In 2009 he made the RTE radio documentary PIECES OF THE WALL, broadcast to mark the twentieth anniversary of the Berlin Wall. In 2009 Martin directed his radio play, TRICKS OF THE TRADE, for RTE. The play was nominated for the Prix Europa. EDITOR: In 2010 he edited Bernd Sahling's short documentary for the 20xBrandenburg event. The set of documentaries won the coveted 'Grimme-Preis'. In 2009 he edited Claudia Buthenhoff's award-winning ARTE documentary KOMEDA: A SOUNDTRACK FOR A LIFE. DIRECTOR: Martin's feature films include the award-winning THE BOY FROM MERCURY (IRELAND), THE BUMBLEBEE FLIES ANYWAY (USA) and THE TESTIMONY OF TALIESIN JONES (UK). Awards include the Celtic Film Festival Jury Prize and a Special Commendation at the Berlinale. His latest project, supported by Northern Irish Screen, is the true story of Helen Lewis based on her best-selling autobiography A TIME TO SPEAK. WORK HISTORY: Martin’s background from the late 1970s to the early 1990s is as a film editor and writer. His editing work over fifteen years in RTE and freelance includes such award-winning films as HUSHABYE BABY and THE BISHOP’S STORY (BUDAWANNY). He edited the TV drama series CAUGHT IN A FREE STATE and THE PRICE. He has extensive experience editing documentaries, including Alan Gilsenan's THE ROAD TO GOD KNOWS WHERE, John McColgan's THE DUBLINERS’ DUBLIN - which Martin also scripted, Double Band Films' THE TROUBLE WITH ART and BETWEEN THE HEDGES (recently re-released on DVD), Sean O'Mordha’s definitive two-hour documentary SAMUEL BECKETT and O'Mordha's classic Beckett film SILENCE TO SILENCE.
