Born and raised in Montana, but in Texas since 1992. Miller received degrees from the University of Montana, the University of Hawaii, Manoa, and the University of North Texas. He spent twenty years in the technology business, primarily working with public and academic libraries, prior to returning to graduate school for his PhD studying the intertwined political economies of state and federal land policy during the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Miller was the recipient of the Montana Historical Society’s James H. Bradley Fellowship in 2013. The experience is due partial credit for Montana The Magazine of Western History publishing an early excerpt of this book, , “Cowboys and Capitalists,” in their Winter 2015 issue The Western Writers of America awarded the article their 2016 Spur Award for best short non-fiction article of the year.
