Dr. Nina Kraus is Hugh Knowles Professor of Communication Sciences, Neurobiology, and Otolaryngology at Northwestern University. As an internationally recognized author, she has more than 400 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book publications. Since 2016, she has given 90 keynote addresses and invited talks including: National Institutes of Health (NIH), Fermi Labs, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Columbia University, Harvard University, Duke University, Rutgers University, Emory University, Tufts University, University of Chicago, Louisiana State University, University of Texas, UCLA Friends of the Semel Institute, Cal Berkeley Alumni group and the Oregon Science Health Brain Institute. Kraus advocates for biologically informed choices in education, health, and society and has addressed the Oklahoma State legislature and United States Congress through NAMM’s webinar series. She regularly participates in media coverage (New York Times, BBC, NPR, Time, Nature, Science and Scientific American) and enjoys discussing the hearing brain in unscripted conversations through the medium of “sound” available on podcasts, radio and youtube. At present, she holds five patents, with three pending, for assessment of sound processing in the brain. Kraus has a history of engaging with communities beyond academic science, including education, industry, the arts, philosophy, athletics, medicine, and the general public. Through her diverse partnerships, she has studied the relationship of musical experience that includes voice and academic performance targeting African American and Latino children living in low-income areas of Chicago and Los Angeles, the impact of HIV on the auditory system in under-resourced communities in China and Tanzania and the biological assessment of hearing health in 500 Division I athletes over 5 years to delineate the auditory effects of concussion and prolonged participation in contact sports.
