Naava Smolash teaches in the English department at Douglas College. Her fiction, poetry, and nonfiction appear in popular and academic publications including Studies in Canadian Literature, West Coast Line, Briarpatch, Everyday Feminism, LitHub, and the University of Toronto Quarterly. Her essay "The Opposite of Rape Culture is Nurturance Culture," under the pen name Nora Samaran, went viral in February 2016 and grew into a book, Turn This World Inside Out (AK Press, 2019). Originally from Montreal (Tiohtià:ke), she lives in Coast Salish Territories and is a 2018 graduate of The Writer's Studio.
