Reymond George Johansen was born in 1951 to John Thomas and Mary Ruth. He was the second of four siblings who grew up in humble conditions in Alabama. He wrote at one time that “all our life stories begin at home.” It was there that he learned about the value of hard work, education, and the importance of never losing your faith, from his parents. His first novel, Message from Boo, is appropriately dedicated in memory to John and Mary. As a boy, R.G. was a dreamer with a vivid imagination. He often found himself more at home in his own mind—conjuring up another battle against an evil foe. His mother and father’s sermons about the importance of completing his education replaced his imagination’s harrowing exploits with real life English and history classes. Unable to escape his parent’s words, he was driven to finish his undergraduate degree by taking night classes while working a full-time job to help pay the tuition. After graduation, R.G. began a forty-year career in the financial services industry—a path that would eventually lead him to Atlanta, Georgia, the scene of his first novel. His time in Atlanta as a senior executive profoundly influenced his fascination with the diversity, culture, and mysteries of the American South. He continued that love in his second novel, Something Sinister Within, set in the Appalachian foothills outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. Today, R.G. has retired to his farm, where he resides with his wife, Ellen, and their dog, Toby. Residing nearby are his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren who are a source of love and support that he cherishes every day.
