Rees Hughes has been section hiking the Pacific Crest Trail since 1981. Growing up in Kansas he found the lure of the mountains irresistible so he traded the flatlands for Seattle, the Olympics, and the Cascades. He has walked his way through some of the most stunning regions on Earth -- from the top of Kilimanjaro to the arid interior of Australia, from the pilgrimage route up Sri Pada in Sri Lanka to the picturesque Cornish coast, from the Himalayas to the Andes -- but he insists there is nothing he has found to equal the Pacific Crest Trail's unique blend of access, wildness, and diversity. And, despite dalliances with ultralight, he still finds a tent and a book to be worth their weight. He is a believer in the importance of story as a way to appreciate, learn about, and celebrate the trails that we love. Rees has lived for the last thirty-six years in Northern California, with his wife, Amy, and their two daughters, Chisa and Mei Lan. He retired from Humboldt State University in 2008.
