The son of a decorated World War Two pilot, Ric Gillespie grew up around airplanes and learned to fly while he was still in high school. In 1985, he left a career as an aviation accident investigator to found The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery. Known by its acronym TIGHAR (pronounced tiger), the nonprofit foundation has an international membership of several hundred scholars, scientists and enthusiasts whose volunteer expertise and financial contributions support the organization's mission to change aviation historical mysteries to documented history. As TIGHAR’s executive director, Ric launched the organization’s investigation of the Amelia Earhart disappearance in 1988. Over the past thirty-seven years he has supervised research that has established beyond a reasonable doubt that Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan died as castaways on Gardner Island (now Nikumaroro), a remote, uninhabited coral atoll 350 miles from her intended destination. TIGHAR's Earhart research and expeditions have been the subject of documentaries produced by NBC News, ABC News, the Discovery Channel, and National Geographic. Ric’s book Finding Amelia – the True Story of the Earhart Disappearance was published in September 2006. His latest book One More Good Flight - The Amelia Earhart Tragedy was published in September 2024 and is considered the definitive work on the Earhart disappearance.
