Richard Alan Haynes was born September 13, 1948 to a hard-working, blue-collar family. At age 4, he contracted polio and his spent early years recovering in Riley Hospital for Children where God significantly touched him and provided the spiritual design of his life into which he grew through the years. He became an accomplished gymnast throughout his high school years. As a result, he attended the University of Louisville with a scholarship in both academics and gymnastics. While at U of L, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy was also Intercollegiate Kentucky Champion on pommel horse, parallel bars and still rings from 1967-1970. Rev. Haynes acquired his Master of Divinity degree in 1975. Also during that year, he met Patricia Ann Malott, the love of his life, who has always claimed that Dick was her garage sale special. (She will have to tell you that story.) They welcomed baby Richard Earl Haynes into their lives in 1982. Rev. Haynes was ordained into the ministry via the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 1977; and they began serving in 1978 at Central Christian Church in Terre Haute, Indiana. He also pastored at Mount Summit Christian Church (Mt. Summit, IN), the Christian Church of Villa Park (Villa Park, IL), Pittsboro Christian Church (Pittsboro, IN) and Central Christian Church in Connersville, Indiana. While in congregational ministry, God blessed Dick with the gift and call into the ministry of spiritual direction – the ancient Christian practice of counseling individuals as to what God was doing in their life and how they would choose to respond. With the onslaught of post-polio syndrome, after 39 years Richard A. Haynes concluded the physically-demanding, time-intensive congregational ministry on December 31, 2006. During retirement, Dr. Haynes began working on a book and The Spiritual Road: Helping Others Grow Spiritually was published in 2012. Dick affectionately concluded that all he knew about spiritual growth and development from cradle to grave was in that volume so his brain was now empty. In March 2022, Dick and Pat moved to St. John, Indiana in order to be closer to their son Rich, Lorna and the three grandsons, Rowan, Lincoln and Silas.
