Robert Howard McCarthy (1966- still kickin..) Born Kingston Jamaica, I saw the end of a colonial empire. Island man of many stories. I attended Jamaica College and while there developed a love for writing. I guess this was borne out of the expressiveness of college life during the 1970's and 80's, some of my friends started drawing, some started singing and rhyming. This was a different thing than before when the vast majority of us only wanted to be lawyers and doctors, this was back in what some consider to be a long time ago. After school daze I drifted into the IT field where I experienced firsthand the process of blending communication and computer tech which developed into our present digital universe. Life has been blessed, I have travelled a bit, it’s opened my eyes to the way we live in various parts of the world. I write for my two great sons Matt and Joel, future generations like them and the hope of keeping a record of our island, its beauty, history and its diverse people. I freelance online, maintain contact with other writers and writing groups and participate in social media sites. The first chapter of my first novel was adapted as a short story and won the 2015 Best Adult Short Story prize in the prestigious Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Literary Competition as “Oshane Goes to Sea” The completed work since attained an award in the novel category for 2016, this competition has seen former winners such as Mervyn Morris who was poet laureate of Jamaica. 2017 saw it recognized by the Jamaica Writer’s Society when it was shorted listed for the Una Marson Award at the Lignum Vitae Writing Awards.
