ROBERT M. SMITH is a former New York Times White House and investigative correspondent who was witness to some of the most important stories in modern history, including Watergate, the Pentagon Papers, and the My Lai Massacre. Smith is a graduate of Harvard College, Columbia Graduate School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, and Yale Law School. In addition to his career in journalism, he worked in a large law firm, ran overseas litigation worldwide for a major bank, and founded his own trial law firm. Smith served in the administration of President Jimmy Carter. He is a barrister of the Inner Temple in England and was director of mediation at an international center in London. He has lectured to the United Nations and to groups in many places in Africa, Asia, and Europe, including at the University of Oxford. He now lives in San Francisco.
