S.L. PRICE, a Senior Writer at Sports Illustrated from 1994-2019, has written four books—the most recent 2016's Playing Through The Whistle: Steel, Football and an American Town, a biography of Aliquippa, Pa. He is currently at work on a book about lacrosse in America. Price is the author of Pitching Around Fidel: A Journey into the Heart of Cuban Sports (2000), which was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Award; Far Afield: A Sportswriting Odyssey (The Lyons Press 2007); and Heart of the Game: Life, Death and Mercy in Minor League America (Harper Collins 2009). Esquire magazine tagged Far Afield as “one of the year’s five best reads” while the Chicago Tribune called the book “a masterpiece.” Before SI, Price was an award-winning columnist and feature writer for The Miami Herald and a columnist and NBA beat writer for The Sacramento Bee.
