Serhii Komar is a game developer and entrepreneur who taught himself. He started out with a book on programming and a passion to make games. His initial venture, a mobile puzzle game, showed that making games could become more than just a hobby. After an initial studio failure, he decided to bet everything, selling his flat to fund a new studio and working from his office to reduce costs. That decision provided the strategic inflection point to change to free-to-play games. A publishing deal followed, which allowed his studio to generate repeat revenues and build a platform to grow. He went on to establish multiple game development studios, head teams, and launch commercially successful games over the years. His experience varies from small-scale development to dealing with publishers, managing monetization, and scaling for large audiences. Outside of development, he speaks at conferences, universities, and podcasts about game business strategies and sustainable development. He also mentors independent developers, offering guidance on creating and growing a studio. Outside the office, he occupies himself playing with his baby son and arguing game design with his programmer wife. He attributes patience, flexibility, and learning from failure as the keys to long-term success. Serhii embraces engagement with entrepreneurs and developers. He publishes a newsletter with insights, creates LinkedIn posts for discussion, and tweets business news. He is just as pleased to offer advice to those who would wish to engage with him on game development as on conducting business.
