About the Author Admittedly, it’s unusual for the author not to write his or her own biography. In fact, most authors leap at the chance to present themselves to their readers, usually in ridiculous and highly exaggerated hyperbole, which really serve no purpose, since by the time a reader gets to the author’s bio, he or she has already bought the book! But Shelby Scarbrough is not a “usual” author – or person, for that matter. That’s not to say that Shelby is “unusual,” but it is to say that she brings a unique combination of experiences, perspectives and spirit to her topic, which is what makes this book both important and an interesting read. I’ve known Shelby for a longer time than I care to say. We worked together in Ronald Reagan’s White House – she was a Presidential Trip Coordinator, and I was a Special Assistant to the President and Assistant Press Secretary. We traveled the world together, where I watched Shelby gain incredible skills working closely with the highest levels of foreign governments on complicated and sensitive arrangements for visits by the president of the United States. After leaving the White House staff, Shelby was appointed a Protocol Officer in the U.S. State Department, where she served as the government principal point of contact with Heads of State and Government visiting the United States. After leaving the State Department, Shelby went on to a successful career as an entrepreneur – including owning 10 fast-food restaurants – and as a motivational speaker, not only regaling her audiences in tales of her extraordinary adventures in Washington and around the world, but in imparting valuable lessons about how people should treat one another. That’s been her “thing” for as long as I have known her. Even under the most pressured and circumstances, Shelby has always paid special attention to the needs of others. It always bothered her when good manners, mutual respect, and decency were lacking. Whether it was an arrogant colleague at the White House barking orders, a foreign diplomat unreasonably demanding special treatment, a customer at a restaurant speaking rudely to an employee, Shelby Scarbrough lamented the waning nature of civility. Hence this book. Shelby is a native Californian a graduate of UCLA and later the Harvard Business School, Owner President Managed Program. But, more importantly, she is a natural optimist who loves the world and believes in the hope of mankind. She is a community builder who genuinely wants to bring people together for the greater good. She’s also smart, savvy, and sincere with no hidden agenda. She wrote this book not to admonish, but to inspire. And because she is legitimately concerned about the tone and tenor of how we communicate with each other and the consequences society faces in the absence of civility. Where she has been and what she has seen has convinced her that it all matters. It should be no surprise that her favorite song is an old gospel song sung by Mahalia Jackson called “If I could make someone happy.” In many ways, Shelby’s book is a gift to society. Take from it what you will. And above all else, be kind to each other. Mark Weinberg, Author, Columnist and “Friend of Shelby”
