Looking for a good read? My tenth and latest book “What a Bee Knows: Exploring the Thoughts, Memories, and Personalities of Bees” from Island Press (Washington, DC) on March 7, 2023 is now available for Amazon ordering and book reviews. Please share a review even if its only 2 or 3 lines. I'd love to hear from you. Born in Rockford, Illinois, I grew up in Orange County, CA and spent my youth exploring tide pools at Laguna Beach, or the chaparral-covered hillsides in Tonner Canyon. Graduated as a Golden Hawk from El Dorado High School in Placentia, CA and earned my BS and MS degrees in Biological Science from California State University, Fullerton. I helped create the Fullerton Arboretum on the campus. I completed my Ph.D. in entomology at the University of California at Davis. Today, I am an adjunct professor in the Entomology and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology departments at the University of Arizona in Tucson. I no longer teach classes but actively conduct research on buzz pollination, stamen biomechanics, and bee brood cell microbiome (bacteria archaea, fungi) with colleagues, along with mentoring Ph.D. and masters degree students at several universities (UA, ASU, Drexel University). My first book was “The Forgotten Pollinators” also from Island Press with co-author Gary Paul Nabhan, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times book prize. My children's book "The Bee Tree" (with Diana Cohn) was a Skipping Stones Honor Award Book, and "Honey Bees: Letters from the Hive, A History of Bees and Honey" is an NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Book. My previous book was "The Reason for Flowers: Their History, Culture, and Biology, and How They Change our Lives" (Scribner, 2016) has been translated into 8 languages. I enjoy landscape and macro photography, creating small fine art bronzes and fossil-hunting.
