Susan Calder was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1951. The oldest of five children, her father came from Deer Island, New Brunswick, a fishing village close to Susan's heart. As a child, she spent every summer vacation on the island, playing imaginary games with her favourite cousin and, occasionally, fishing for haddock and codfish. Susan's maternal grandparents immigrated to Montreal after World War I from (then) Czechoslovakia. A highlight for Susan, a few years ago, was her first visit to the Czech Republic, where she connected with a cousin she had never met, who still lives in the family village of Tasov. Thanks to Google translate, they still exchange letters and cards, even though neither one knows the other's language. After high school, Susan began an English degree at Montreal's Concordia University. It took her 19 years to graduate, with a Bachelor of Urban Studies. During this time, she worked as an insurance claims examiner, married and had two sons. At the age of 39, her degree finished and her sons in school, Susan's creative drive from childhood re-emerged. She decided to become a writer. Six years later her husband's job transfer took her to Calgary, AB. Susan's first published works were travel features in The Montreal Gazette newspaper, but her passion from the start was fiction. She went on to publish numerous short stories in magazines and journals and, eventually, her first novel, Deadly Fall, a murder mystery set in Calgary, her new home. Ten Days in Summer, the sequel, takes place during city's annual ten-day Calgary Stampede and Rodeo. Books # 3 & 4 continue through the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The novels follow the adventures and personal growth of insurance adjuster sleuth Paula Savard, a baby boomer searching for meaning and passion in her life. Through her writing career, Susan has found support through numerous writing groups. She currently belongs to the Alexandra Writers Centre Society, Crime Writers of Canada and the Writers Guild of Alberta and is a co-chair for Bouchercon Calgary 2026. When Susan isn't writing or engaged in writing-related activities, she is likely to be travelling, hiking, reading, walking, biking, doing Zumba at her local gym or hanging out with her husband, her grown-up sons and granddaughter, other family members or friends.
