Teena Dorn’s deep love for animals began in childhood, shaped by a life surrounded by diverse creatures. Growing up in Austin, Texas, but close to her family’s ranch in west Texas, she was immersed in the rhythms of life with dogs, cats, ducks, and even deer and other wild animals. Her grandmother’s ranch, bustling with cattle, chickens, goats, and peacocks, added to her early experiences and fostered a natural bond with animals. Teena’s family has always included beloved pets, each leaving an indelible mark on her heart. The family’s current dog, Rusty, was adopted from a shelter at the urging of their son, joining their home some years after the loss of Nicki, a spirited Jack Russell terrier who was dearly loved. Nicki had a unique personality—he would race through the wide-open spaces around their home, keeping watch over the property line and even protecting the nearby school from visiting Canada Geese. His passing at age 10 left an emptiness that time has softened but never truly filled. Teena’s daughter shares her mother’s love for animals and is also the proud owner of two dogs, one large and one small. Although she once dreamed of having a cat and working at a pet shelter, she discovered she had a cat allergy, a bittersweet realization for an animal lover. Beyond her love for animals, Teena understands profound loss on a personal level, having experienced the passing of her mother at just 16 years old. Decades later, that loss still brings a tear, but her journey with grief, including counseling and the support of loved ones, has helped her find ways to heal. Today, Teena lives with her husband of over 30 years, and her adult children often return to visit, filling the house with laughter and love. And, of course, Rusty is always close by, offering the comfort that only a beloved pet can bring.
