While I'm a fan of the NIV Dramatized for my audio Bible, what I like about this one is how, in addition to the full cast dramatization, it has lovely sound effects where appropriate. The celebrity cast of voices varies in quality; I get why Moses is read in a halting way (for characterization( but it gets old fast in the non-narrative sections of his writings. Best voice is John Rhys Davies as the prophet Samuel, though Louis Gosset Junior is credible as John.

Mulgrew's narration is perfect, as only an actor who has inhabited a character for years can be. The book itself provides context and resolution to the events of the series, also getting into the long-term effects of the events of the series--something serial television doesn't do well. Deeply enjoyable; will probably be a repeat listen.

John Scalzi needs to rediscover the English language's rich variety of synonyms for the word "said." In print, my eyes might've skipped over it, but in audio, it's grating to hear the word "said" that many times per minute even as I'm loving both the story and Wheaton's performance. This could be a matter of bad editing, but the book's structure is too good to pin it entirely on that. If it's a deliberate artistic choice, it's unclear what it's trying to accomplish. It wouldn't take very long to simply go through and use a few different verbs here and there and make it easier on the ear.

I read the print edition of this book and idly wondered, "Hm, did Audible--?" and was not disappointed. The performances are fabulous and the difference between print and audio on this is like reading a play versus seeing it performed. It was perfectly charming on the page, but sparkled in the ear.

The story is fine and kind of sweet, but I couldn't stand how slow the narration was. Best listened to at 1.25 speed or higher.

This is the kind of book the audio format was designed for. Hearing Dolly Parton talk about her songs with clips of those songs is a far richer experience than any print format could do.

The first two books in the trilogy are great, but the third seems to struggle with what story the author is really trying to tell and who the main character really is. The third one would be nearly unintelligible without the first two, so it's good that they're packaged together. Great narration throughout!

This series engages me just as much, if not more, than traditional television. Is it particularly deep? While I wouldn't call it literature, it has just enough substance to be satisfying. High art? I wouldn't call it that, either, but it's beautifully done and a real treat to the ears. This book would lose some of its soul if it were merely printed. It's not as serious or heavily plotted as Harry Potter, but scratches many of the same itches for fantasy adventure. Delightful.

I deliberately read and listen to books about perspectives different from my own, and this was a fascinating examination of one I haven't dwelled on much. Funny, empathetic, and surprisingly well-researched.
