About this listen
The word pops up anywhere exaggerations are sold. Telling a tall tale. Placing a tall order. Tall, dark, and handsome. And, of course, let’s not forget the proverbial “tall drink of water”. This bothers Mara Altman, and not only because she’s five-foot-zero, but also because her experience as a journalist, humorist, and essayist has led her to challenge assumptions about human existence. Altman’s most recent book, Gross Anatomy: Dispatches from the Front (and Back), was a 2019 finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor, and wittily dissected long-held assumptions about our bodies for the deeper truth. Her conclusion: There is greatness in our grossness.
In her Audible Original A Short Drink of Water, Altman challenges the assumption that taller is better. Her journey to empower those at the short end of the stick (and why is it always the short end?) delivers a hilarious and heartfelt look at the differences between tall and short and how people seek to narrow them both physically and psychologically. You’ll meet people of every size and opinion in this deeply reported and richly comical ride through a world where every inch counts.

Story
At 32 years old, the recently married author found herself suddenly surrounded by babies, and the expectation of family and friends that she would soon have one herself. Altman’s ambivalence prompted a search for the meaning of motherhood - one that led her to wear a fake pregnancy belly, attend pre-natal yoga classes, debate experts, and even tend to her very own crying plastic baby. Her reporting led to a surprising and uplifting lesson about life, love and the choices we make.

Story
What do you want to be when you grow up? It's a familiar question we're all asked as kids. While seemingly harmless, the question has unintended consequences. It can make you feel like you need to choose one job, one passion, one thing to be about. Guess what? You don't. Having a lot of different interests, projects and curiosities doesn't make you a "jack-of-all-trades, master of none". Your endless curiosity doesn't mean you are broken or flaky.

In Everthing Is F*cked, Mark Manson turns his gaze from the inevitable flaws within each individual self to the endless calamities taking place in the world around us. Drawing from the pool of psychological research on these topics, as well as the timeless wisdom of philosophers such as Plato, Nietzsche, and Tom Waits, he dissects religion and politics and the uncomfortable ways they have come to resemble one another. He looks at our relationships with money, entertainment, and the internet, and how too much of a good thing can psychologically eat us alive.

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

In his landmark best seller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant, in the blink of an eye, that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept?

Story
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

At some point, every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it’s wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history. With technology, our abilities to connect with and sort through these options are staggering. So why are so many people frustrated?

She discovered that based on their answer, people fit into Four Tendencies: Upholders, Questioners, Obligers, and Rebels. Our Tendency shapes every aspect of our behavior, so using this framework allows us to make better decisions, meet deadlines, suffer less stress, and engage more effectively.

Story
When Kate wins an item at her children’s elementary school auction - an all-inclusive trip to SeaView at Sandpiper Bay - she thinks it’s just what her family needs after a decade of career disappointments and a marriage on its last legs. She has no reason to believe that said trip is a Fyre Festival-level fraud and, in fact, the catalyst to her unraveling. But it is. Oh, but it is.

Short and Sweet!
As a 5’2.5” person, I found this incredibly interesting. Who knew that there was so much more to being short, than being short? This is well researched, and as a parent, it tugs at your moral and emotional heartstrings. This is an interesting listen, I highly recommend!

Very well done - Refreshing
I have struggled with my short stature my whole life. I have been laughed by brothers of girls I dated, ignored by peers, and worse of all been told that people would rather be dead than be my height. I am 5’5”, not tall but unsure why death is a better option. Anyway, this book offers fantastic insight. Everyone has something they want to change about themselves. Surprisingly height is not first on my list. I won’t say I am proud of my height, just disappointed that I can sometimes be judged and treated inferior for it. Oh, about those brothers. Usually I would wait until my girlfriend left the room, and asked them if they wanted to tangle with a very experienced varsity wrestler. One took me up on it and regretted it. If Mike Tyson could be heavy weight champion at 5’10”, I am confident that compensating with a skill bridges the gap with the “real men”. No chip on my shoulder, just standing up for myself.

I loved it!
So great to have a writer focus on the short point of view(as a shoe woman myself). I really appreciated Mara Altman’s humor and honesty approaching this topic as well as her vulnerability talking about her own experience and as a mother. It’s a great listen, entertaining and informative.

Charming and Interesting
I deliberately read and listen to books about perspectives different from my own, and this was a fascinating examination of one I haven't dwelled on much. Funny, empathetic, and surprisingly well-researched.

I wish I was shorter
The book not only shares a theory that smaller is better it also shares tales of smaller people, the psychological challenges they face in a world built for bigger.
I love how I constantly had to check myself and my built in beliefs, questioning every single one of them

Inspired to think differently about height
I did not expect this story to inspire me to look at the world differently, to encourage others to as well, yet it did. Why are we so obsessed with height? There are some answers here but equal challenge to to say “it doesn’t make sense”. With a few family members and petite friends I found fodder from the author to make a case to others to look past the size of these brilliant folks. Thanks for the perspective.

A wonderful listen for the ‘junior detectives’
The humor and research combined made this much enjoyable. 4’11 here and appreciate all that I was able to learn! I’ve always been proud of my height, but man - those comments! This is a wonderful listen for all of us shorties.

A thoughtful and hilarious piece for all shapes and sizes
I lucked out in getting to turn this one on during a long drive today! As with all of Mara’s work, this is another hilarious take on something that most of us don’t think twice about. While she’s focused on what I like to call being vertically challenged, it’s interesting to think about how society came to label certain traits and characteristics as desirable, and this will definitely make you think. I highly recommend checking this out!
