Story
A commander who bled to defend her people, Ahnna is haunted by two beliefs. The first is that she failed to protect Ithicana from invasion. And the second is that saving her homeland means leaving it behind forever. The Maridrinians left Ithicana in ruins and its people impoverished. So when the wealthy kingdom of Harendell claims her as a bride for its crown prince, Ahnna is prepared to do whatever it takes to gain influence as the future queen. And to control the gold that comes with the throne.

Loved it!

This series is really undervalued. It is beautifully written complex, full of twist and turns, and with just enough romance and spice. This is probably my favorite book of the series. Ahna is a very imperfect character, but that is what makes her so interesting.
You really feel empathy for her. You understand her fear and confusion. You want her to succeed but no, she will keep making mistakes. Wonderful.
The political intrigue is also very interesting. That is one of the things that I like most about this book, it is romance yes but with a wonderful plot, in addition to the relationships. I can’t say much more without giving anything away. I will just say it is worth the listen.

Did not disappoint. I love Corm and Robyn. Great mystery. A little scary, even. Can’t wait for the next one.

Story
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

A horrifying story, impressively told

I got a lot more than what expected out of this book. I expected to learn more about the HW case, but it was a sobering tale about journalism, lawyers, public relations and abuse of power... not to mention about the culture of protecting powerful men and valuing profit over people.
I had a career as a journalist and later as a PR practitioner, so this story really hit home for me. I appreciated his respect for the women who were brave enough to tell their story. I found a lot to reflect on about unethical practices, the subtle (and then aggressive) attempts to influence reporting and kill stories; the "friends" that approach you offering help, when they are serving their own interests.. I appreciated Farrow's honestly in writing about the doubts about your role as a journalist in a case that affects so many people so personally, as well as how worries about your professional future can seep in when you do work that faces so much criticism and opposition.
I was enthralled with this book. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in a well-written and reported story of corruption, abuse and influence. I especially recommend it for anyone who works, in any capacity, in media.

First book is the best book in this great series

A beautiful story. A great love story and a great scifi. The performance is wonderful. It's incredible that this novel could be so well carried by two characters. Tells you how great the characters are. A little suspense with a very satisfying ending. I listened to, enjoyed and would recommend the whole series, but the first book is without a doubt the best.

Story
Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful - and cruel - father. Now Scarlett's father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the faraway once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over. But this year Scarlett's long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval's mastermind organizer, Legend.

Great performance but weak story
Reviewed: 07-23-17
First, I should give the author credit for creating this interesting fantasy world and game. Because of the premise, I thought I would love this book, but sadly the writing is poor. The story is interesting, but the two female lead characters, Tella and Scarlet are too unlikeable. They are poorly developed and come across as not too bright.
But most of all, I just kept wishing the writer would have had an editor that could help fix the repetitiveness and the cheesy descriptions and flowery language. The story was also weak. The clues and the way she solved them made no sense. The attempts to create suspense failed. And the ending was too predictable.
Overall, the book could be an ok way to pass the way to pass the time, but the book falls short of its promise.
