To rescue her elderly neighbor, Eudora Gibson, from the cellar in which she's been trapped. To make her way to the nearby town of Poetry, where the townspeople have begun to gather in the only building left standing. There was a lot about this book that I liked. The characters were well developed and likable. But I would have enjoyed it so much more without all the detailed sexual encounters.

I really loved and appreciated this book. But I kept getting irritated by Mary Catherine’s unwillingness to share her heart condition with Marcus. Now I plan to listen to the next book in the series to see the outcome.

Weaving her own family's oral history with 30 years of research, Margaret Walker's novel brings the everyday experiences of slaves to light. I liked this book at the start, and some of it made me laugh out loud. In general it was written very interestingly, but the further I progressed the worse the language got. I would have liked to finish the book but I couldn't get past the bad language and the irreverence in parts of it.
