This story really opened my eyes to all the stories I never learned in school. My grandfather and his brother moved to OK from Kentucky in the late 1800s. My father, brother, and sister were born in OK. my family moved to NM in when I was six, but we often returned to visit family. I never learned or heard of the Tulsa massacre/Black Wall Street neither did I hear of or learn about the Osage Indian experience. These stories need to be taught in school history classes not to shame current students for the past but to enlighten us as to our histories and celebrate how far we have come.

Story
As a young boy growing up on the outskirts of Dublin, the stage and screen legend sought refuge in a world of imagination among the fields and hills near his home, at the edge of a rapidly encroaching city. Moving between sensual recollection of childhood in a now almost vanished Ireland and commentary on stardom, the actor-writer returned to Broadway and Audible to reflect on a life’s journey.

There were too many side stories. I sometimes lost track of who was integral to the story and who was just added fluff. It is fiction but the author tried to weave in too many suspects which made the ability to push the “believe” button too many times. Several of the twists were very good and surprising. I had a hard time believing the main character was a licensed therapist, nothing she said or did was consistent with that fact. Too many bad guys, pick Russian or Mexican cartel point of view. A smooth operator like Luis suddenly becoming Jack Nicholson is absurd. I was on the edge of my seat a few times but she is no Sidney Sheldon. The book was mediocre and so was the reader.

This was not Patterson’s best book, but it was entertaining.,the characters were somewhat shallow and the “twists” were fairly predictable. The reader was not very good for this story. She couldn’t really build up tension and keep me on the edge of my seat. She sounded more like my third grade teacher reading “ Call it Courage” after our school lunch. I think her voice and meticulous enunciation would be better used for reading stories to school students rather than narrating thrillers and political intrigue.

Story
In the grand storytelling style that is his signature, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the very beginnings of the Jewish faith, thousands of years ago. Through the predecessors of four modern men and women, we experience the entire colorful history of the Jews, including the life of the early Hebrews and their persecutions, the impact of Christianity, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition, all the way to the founding of present-day Israel and the Middle East conflict.

I first read this book as a teenager and reread it every 4-5 years. It is so thought provoking I have to put it down periodically just to reflect on the points of view presented. I feel a religious experience every time I read it.

This story was timely and entertaining. Once I started it, I had a hard time stopping it until I finished. A story emanating in the opioid epidemic that introduces differing attitudes towards users, dealers, and the music industry provides a a backdrop in this fabulous legal thriller. I look forward to reading/listening to the next in the series!

This was a fabulous book written by a pretty memorable person. Bob Dole’ shared is family’s story and growing up in a small Midwestern town which molded him into the man he became. His experience during WWII and catastrophic injury as the fighting was winding down in Europe also changed his life but his faith, family, and small town values saw him through. Coming from a very political family my familiarity with Bob Dole was all about his career in the House as well as supporting his wife’s career in politics. This story shed light on an extraordinary man who served his country all his life. Sadly, we lost one more member of The Greatest Generation this week.

Why hasn’t anyone made a movie based on this book? It is fabulous. The characters, the plot, the insight to high financial institutions. I imagine Christian Bale, Matt Damon, or Tom Cruise type of actor to play Chris. Denzel Washington as Quinten. If I was a Hollywood player, I would buy the rights to this book!!!!!
