Story
Beth Pickering is on the verge of finally capturing the rare deathwhistler bird when Professor Devon Lockley swoops in, stealing both her bird and her imagination like a villain. Albeit a handsome and charming villain, but that's beside the point. As someone highly educated in the ruthless discipline of ornithology, Beth knows trouble when she sees it, and she is determined to keep her distance from Devon.

Disappointed at the non-end end
Reviewed: 07-31-24
Really wish the jumping to conclusions straight into betrayal and vows of vengeance trope wasn't just grabbed by the horns at the end here. It's just the easy way out of a book- I know there's another in this series, but truly, what a disappointing ending. It's like soap opera quality. It shows very little character development too, as the jump straight to rage reaction is used throughout the book- even more soap opera-y.
I know I'll eventually get to the last book in the series, but this one isn't inspiring any hurry on my part.

Love This Series

I absolutely adore this series. Listen, you won't regret it!
My one gripe is the female narrator -- please stop making all the female voices whiny so often. They're badass warriors, even the less confident and/or young ones.

Story
Cecilia Bassingwaite is the ideal Victorian lady. She's also a thief. Like the other members of the Wisteria Society crime sorority, she flies around England drinking tea, blackmailing friends, and acquiring treasure by interesting means. Sure, she has a dark and traumatic past and an overbearing aunt, but all things considered, it's a pleasant existence. Until the men show up.

Eh
Reviewed: 08-19-21
The story is good. Editing and narration could have been better. "Seemed" and all it's iterations litter the book and a decent editor could have made that a non-issue. And the narrator loved building up her voice to a climax, so much so that the actual climaxes of the story aren't as strong. Just a little overload.

Story
After a political scandal, fledgling lobbyist Dempsey Jo Killebrew is left almost broke, unemployed, and homeless. She reluctantly accepts to refurbish Birdsong, the old family place in Guthrie, Georgia. But, oh, is Dempsey in for a surprise. "Bird Droppings" would more aptly describe the moldering Pepto Bismol - pink dump. There's also a murderously grumpy old lady who has claimed squatter's rights and isn't moving out. Ever.

Awful Editing, OK Plot
Reviewed: 08-22-18
This book would have seriously benefited from a better editor. There were so many inconsistencies and little tweaks that could have made it A LOT more pleasant read. Especially because the plot line is overall enjoyable.
Also, the narrator made quite a few noticable reading ("l-eye-ved" vs lived for example) and pronunciation errors.
