Well developed characters and plot. I enjoyed the story. The narrator was also very good.

The book was excellent, the mystery quite compelling. I agree that the narrator could have spoken up more in places. Made it quite difficult to hear while driving. I wasn't expecting a soliloquy on dementia and suicide death packs in my light hearted murder mystery, but it was well done and in line with the characters.

It was good to hear from Stephen King again and nice to catch up on Holly. Although the story had no huge plot twists that you couldn't see coming, it was well written and very entertaining. The narrator did a great job too.

This was a re-read for me. The story is one of my favorites. King presents actions and reactions that are logical and believable. The large number of characters are realistic work well together. This is a great statement about the human condition. The Audible edition is a good addition to my library.

After the opening, I thought this was going to have much more political intreque and espionage. It was a good story about the culture and political atmosphere in the rural, disconnected villages, but it read more like a short story.

The narrator was adequate. The story just never made me believe it. There were parts that suddenly got very poetic in the descriptions that was both inconsistent with the rest of the prose and unnecessary to the story. And apparently Koon just discovered Jungian beliefs about synchronicity because he can't quit mentioning it constantly throughout the story. Spoiler Alert: The fact that everybody comes to the belief that the problem is ancient alien A-I without even examining any other possibilities isn't very realistic. This book just tried too hard to tie all of its bits and pieces together without ever convincing me the way other authors make you feel like their stories are a realistic possibility in the moment. Very disappointed!

Honestly, I bought this book for others, but it turned out to be exactly what I needed. I bought the book to help an older generation of Christians understand why the younger people weren't falling all over themselves to jump on board with Christianity, even though they are seeking God and agree wholeheartedly with Jesus Christ's teachings. I bought it to help me explain my dissolution and discontent. I bought it to explain to others why some people abhor what has been done in the name of and by Christians so strongly that they run full out the opposite direction. And I bought this book to explain to those abhorrent of the history, why I choose to remain a Christian, for now. This book isn't about one religion, far from it. It isn't about which path you choose. It's about stopping to see things from the perspectives of people outside of your group. It's about how to return to the teachings of Christ and how to choose your part in that transformation.

I highly recommend this for people of all faiths and no faith, because it does such a wonderful job of helping you see past your own perspective and biases. You can pull from it strength to be a part of the change , or find it useful in helping determine you are too tired to fight for change from within. Or perhaps it will solidify your atheism. One thing it will do, if you'll listen to all of it, even the parts to which you most object, is broaden your perspective and humility.

We Baptists are taught that God is never changing and I still believe this is true. God never needs to change. But we do. We are constantly changing. We now have plastic in our bodies, are born with it in there! We are told many times in the Bible that God's ways are so far beyond our comprehension, yet instead of truly seeking God's face, we so often project our mental and physical limitations onto God. Jesus put it all so succinctly when he stated that Love is the prime directive - not just love of people who agree with you, think like you, but especially of those who hate you. As many more "mainline" ministers are beginning to preach, we desperately need a recentering back to the Love based philosophy of Christ, if we are to claim to be followers of Christ. And if you choose to leave whatever you associate with spiritually now, I will still love you and I will understand your heartache.

Richard Osman does not disappoint! And neither does Lesley Manville.
I really enjoy the characters in this series and the plots are clever with great twists. Plus, the books are written with humor and logic. Nice relaxing, non-offensive story.

NOT VAMPIRE STORIES! Authors Throughout History

First and foremost, if you get this as an audio book, the chapters in no way reflect the actual vampire stories and there is no index of stories or authors, so there is absolutely no way to go to the stories and or authors you got this book hoping to read. Every chapter is about a period of writing and begins with a detailed history of that period, then goes on to discuss the pertinent writers, and, I'm assuming, eventually gets around to the actual stories (however I have no actual proof of this, as I haven't been able to fast forward through a chapter in an increment that gets to an actual story so, in fact, there may not be any actual stories, only descriptions of what the vampires are like in each author's work.) If what you are looking for is an in-depth description of the writers of vampire fiction throughout history, you've come to the right place. If you actually wanted to read stories about vampires (like I did), you will be VERY disappointed!
