About this listen

The fourth installment in the beloved and New York Times bestselling series from Richard Osman, also author of We Solve Murders

“The best Murder Club book yet. . . A poignant complement to both the fair-play mystery plot and the characters’ lively humor.”

—The New York Times Book Review

It's rarely a quiet day for the Thursday Murder Club.

Shocking news reaches them—an old friend has been killed, and a dangerous package he was protecting has gone missing.

The gang's search leads them into the antiques business, where the tricks of the trade are as old as the objects themselves. As they encounter drug dealers, art forgers, and online fraudsters—as well as heartache close to home—Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim have no idea whom to trust.

With the body count rising, the clock ticking down, and trouble firmly on their tail, has their luck finally run out?

And who will be the last devil to die?

Critic reviews

“Skulduggery and laughs abound as our favorite gaggle of amateur-detective retirees tackle drug runners, dodgy antique dealers, art forgers and Battenberg cake recipes.”
—People

“The best Murder Club book yet. . . A poignant complement to both the fair-play mystery plot and the characters’ lively humor.”—New York Times Book Review

“So what is it about the Thursday Murder Club books that make them so broadly appealing? The simple answer is that they are really good. The writing is pithy and fresh, so much so that I kept writing down lines from The Last Devil To Die. . . But there’s more than just quotable sentences at work here. Osman’s plots play fair with the reader, carefully placing 'red herrings' to fool the reader into picking the wrong possible murder suspect—a gambit that has improved with each successive book. The endings feel both inevitable and earned: the exact combination one wants in a good mystery. . . Osman’s greatest strength is fusing the puzzle-mastery of Christie and her Golden Age peers with emotional earnestness and wry humor.” —Esquire

Like old friends

Years ago I watched and rewatched a BBC series, As Time Goes By, and always felt that Jean and Lionel were like my good friends. The Murder Club series affects me the same. I’m certainly old enough to be one of them, if only they’d invite me to join them. When Lesley Manville was replaced after the second book, I was disappointed, but Fiona Shaw does a commendable job and I appreciate her accents and distinctive character voices.

Another Gem

I’m writing this with eyes half mast because I stayed up much too late listening. Lot of laughs, but some real tears, too. I love these characters more with each book.

Loved it but a tear jerker

Anticipated and loved. The forth book of a wonderful series. You could reach each book individually and still follow but the heart is knowing the characters and finding new things to love about them. A sad heart felt sorry as we say goodbye to a loved character. Will be re-listen to book over again just after finishing. Yes it's that good.

More than a Mystery

Brilliant depiction of Stephen and Elizabeth as they deal with Stephen's dementia and death.

Give Fiona Shaw a Chance

I absolutely love this series, but I waited a year to listen to the last book because of all of the negative reviews about the narration. What a mistake! Yes, her narration style differs from Leslie Manville's, and yes, sometimes her hushed tones make it hard to understand (Air Pods help), but I love how she brings these beloved characters to life. Fiona Shaw is a gifted actress (I kept thinking about her character in Killing Eve - the embodiment of Elizabeth!) who conveys both the hilarity and the heartbreak in this novel to perfection. If you don't agree, do yourself a favor and buy the book in print form, especially if you've ever loved someone suffering from dementia. The passages describing Stephen's perceptions and revelations about life are incredibly eloquent and moving. Unlike most fun little mystery novels, this one will stay in my mind for a long, long time.
