Publisher's summary

The fourth installment in the beloved and New York Times bestselling series from Richard Osman, also author of We Solve Murders

“The best Murder Club book yet. . . A poignant complement to both the fair-play mystery plot and the characters’ lively humor.”

—The New York Times Book Review

It's rarely a quiet day for the Thursday Murder Club.

Shocking news reaches them—an old friend has been killed, and a dangerous package he was protecting has gone missing.

The gang's search leads them into the antiques business, where the tricks of the trade are as old as the objects themselves. As they encounter drug dealers, art forgers, and online fraudsters—as well as heartache close to home—Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim have no idea whom to trust.

With the body count rising, the clock ticking down, and trouble firmly on their tail, has their luck finally run out?

And who will be the last devil to die?

Critic reviews

“Skulduggery and laughs abound as our favorite gaggle of amateur-detective retirees tackle drug runners, dodgy antique dealers, art forgers and Battenberg cake recipes.”
—People

“The best Murder Club book yet. . . A poignant complement to both the fair-play mystery plot and the characters’ lively humor.”—New York Times Book Review

“So what is it about the Thursday Murder Club books that make them so broadly appealing? The simple answer is that they are really good. The writing is pithy and fresh, so much so that I kept writing down lines from The Last Devil To Die. . . But there’s more than just quotable sentences at work here. Osman’s plots play fair with the reader, carefully placing 'red herrings' to fool the reader into picking the wrong possible murder suspect—a gambit that has improved with each successive book. The endings feel both inevitable and earned: the exact combination one wants in a good mystery. . . Osman’s greatest strength is fusing the puzzle-mastery of Christie and her Golden Age peers with emotional earnestness and wry humor.” —Esquire

I loved it.

I think this is the best one in the series. What I love about these books are yes they are mysteries, but there’s also really incredible character development. You get to know and love these characters and their backstory’s as well as solving the mystery. Well done.

Brilliant Fun

Absolutely beautiful story! So much cunning in these characters. This book brought me pure joy. So brilliantly consistent.

Book one: 5 Stars
Book two: 5 Stars
Book three: 5 Stars

And this book: 5 stars

From the first book I went into this story already loving Richard Osman’s sense of humor from British Panel shows.

When asked for one word to describe his books he used, “comforting” and that is precisely what it is!

These characters are moved by friendship. Wholesome. Nurturing. Challenging.
Friendship in all kinds of love. Romantic, Platonic, heterosexual, homosexual. All walks of life, all human attachments and networks of support for each other.
“Love finds a language.”

Elizabeth, former spy, Joyce, former nurse, Ron, former union & Ibrahim, still practicing psychiatry are in the best club at Cooper Chase retirement home!

I’m packing my bags & moving in with them!

I LOVE this weird

So much fun! Amazing characters and plot. Certain subjects are written such a heart breaking manner that you sit and cry yourself, while other sections had me laughing out loud. The Thursday murder club series are truly some of best books I’ve ever read. I can’t wait for the next one! So worth the money!

Insight into aging

I am 78 and my husband is 79. I am still an an academic but we are beginning to experience dementia and it’s sorrows together. This wonderful series is a respectful understanding of what it means to age.

Truly Brilliant

Its hard to write this review without spoilers, every individual character story is wonderful. However, Ron's story will stay with me forever. I think Fiona Shaw was excellent.

Best yet!

Osman has taken us to amazing emotional heights in this latest installment of The Thursday Murder Club. The first three books were sharp, fun and charming and this one is a rare gift. I was in tears several times while listening to The Last Devil To Die as I followed Stephen’s progressive decline to its beautifully crafted conclusion. It did not help that I was driving to see my best friend in her Alzheimer’s care unit while listening to pertinent passages. The picture the author paints of Stephen’s confusion, bravery and choices is a masterpiece. Thank you, Richard, for this precious book. I loved every minute of listening to it…and the reader was just perfect.

The Thursday Murder Club has my heart

Richard Osman takes the gang to the next level with plot and character development . He writes eloquently about dementia and the role of memory in our identity. Highly recommend this series!

Entertaining Story Full of Twists

Narration a bit better than the 3rd book, however still falls short of Lesley Manville. The accents get muddled (Welsh accent?) By the end of the book the main characters are also losing their defining accents. There is a bit of breathiness to the dialog delivery, but I was able to hang on and see the story through to the end. Richard Osman has the right combination of humor, poignancy and mystery caper beautifully written - with care… that is an applaudable difference everyone can discern as they read, or listen. The interviews at the end are especially good and inspiring.
