Story
The ice is coming. It was the last thing we expected, but the world is freezing. A new ice age has dawned. Billions have fled the glaciers. A cataclysmic war is coming. In orbit, a group of scientists are running the Winter Experiments, a last-ditch attempt to understand why the planet is cooling. None of the climate models they build make sense. But then they discover an anomaly, an unexplained variation in solar radiation...and something else. Close to the burning edge of the sun, they catch a fleeting glimpse of something that shouldn’t be there....

Story
It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

This was a good story but there were slow areas. It ties it all and has surprising twists. You need to listen to the very end. It was good.

The series started out interesting
Reviewed: 04-29-24
This became a little more predictable, and the conversations became an interesting the little things going back-and-forth. However, this could just be how it was delivered, though it was read very well. I found my mind wandering during the reading of the book. I did not finish so it could be different if I could've gotten through the middle book.

I like the personality of Kate and I could envision what was happening easily. But I felt, though I was listening to a TV show or a sitcom. It's fun, easy listening. Don't need to be extremely engaged and the personalities overflow.

Not as interesting
Reviewed: 03-25-24
This book did not keep me as interested as the others. For some reason, the narrator kind of threw me off, and the volume goes up and down quite a bit. But it also could've been the story was a little predictable from myself. The others were different and cut my attention much more than this one. It was OK.

Had a hard time connecting
Reviewed: 10-13-23
I have never had a bad experience with these authors before, so it was a little odd. I don’t think the performance or overall book is bad it did not grab my attention enough to follow along closely enough and i found that I kept losing my place. I did re-listen to a lot of different parts. And I don’t know if I fully understand what the book was about. It’s a book you’re going to have to pay closer attention to, maybe. I will say I kept thinking I was listening to Pentecost narrating and my expectations were confused. However, I enjoy these authors, and it will not stop me from picking up another one of their many many books or trying new series. Thanks!

Story
A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

It confirms my thoughts about home town cities, towns, states…. that focus on a sport and everyone can be swayed. how everything revolves around that sport. But it also pulls out the so well known societal problems, patterns and human tendencies and not everybody sees everything the same way. Who’s responsibility is this and why that … and we’re not all the same with what is just. It’s a good book.
