About this listen

The ice is coming. It was the last thing we expected, but the world is freezing. A new ice age has dawned and humanity has been forced to confront its own extinction. Billions have fled the glaciers, crowding out the world’s last habitable zones. They can run from the ice, but they can’t escape human nature: a cataclysmic war is coming.

In orbit, a group of scientists are running the Winter Experiments, a last-ditch attempt to understand why the planet is cooling. None of the climate models they build make sense. But then they discover an anomaly, an unexplained variation in solar radiation...and something else. Close to the burning edge of the sun, they catch a fleeting glimpse of something that shouldn’t be there....

Suddenly humanity must face the possibility it is not alone in the universe. And the terrifying possibility that whatever is out there may be trying to exterminate us.

Love it!

Great story line all the way through, loved it from beginning to end! Love the connection to the characters, different aspects of space and how everything was slowly but surely revealed. High reccomed it.

Just fun. A good trip

We all have different taste, but this story has a broad appeal. Riddle has a style and this work shines with his style of story telling.

Bad Science and too many miraculous escapes

The concept of the story was interesting, but the delivery made it hard to enjoy. All of the interpersonal tension was artificial, and could have been resolved immediately by people actually talking and listening. We are supposed to believe that these highly trained professional astronauts would act like teenagers.
The science was pretty terrible in places, which was a big distraction.

Thoroughly engaging, engrossing syfy

I was extremely pleased with this book. knowing the reviews and awards beforehand I understood that it would be quality writing. My concern was the plot and characters. Its been awhile since I listened to a book split between two characters throughout its entirety, but that was made easier by the use of two separate, excellent narrators.

The story is engrossing, although it definitely felt like it lagged in the middle. I'm not sure how I feel about the end... excited for the followup.

I do wish he hasn't taken so freaking long to discover the secret. I get why he did it, but it very irritating and far fetched.

And my other issue is the 'development' of the female character. More one gender can try to save the world and be consistently intelligent and more than just a device to further the plot and male messiah development.

Well balanced telling of interesting ideas.

This is an interesting well balanced story of intelligent ideas.
When large ideas are discussed in a manner that is interesting for most everybody to follow without being tedious you can open the experience to broader audiences. If this is done without sacrificing the meaningful content the opportunity for successful writing may be close at hand. This story opens the floor to dissusing a multitude of new ideas backed with an understanding that the past will always be with us even if we are not aware of what it is. Huray for a catalyst of open discussion of large ideas!

Excellent part 1

I really enjoyed this audiobook, it was gripping and entertaining. When I started listening, I didn't know it was part one of two books. Unfortunately, at the time of writing this review, the second book has not been released for sale, otherwise I would have instantly added it to my library. I can't wait to find out what happens to the world and the characters in the future. I felt both narrators did a fantastic job on both the text and production. Well worth a listen.

Different but Good

I've loved Riddle's books in the past so I was a little concerned about this new direction but ended up loving it. Well done once again.

Good premise dumb story

The premise behind earths destruction was unique and kept the story interesting but the characters were laughable, The relationship behind the 2 protaganists was so inprobable that it ruined the story for me and kept me from wanting to hear book 2.

I give the author credit for addressing the issue that their is something called zero gravity and is a big hinderance to space travel, which gets overlooked in so many Sci-Fi books
