What’s the opposite of “there’s no there there”? Amazing universe with no story or plot. It’s as if the author just couldn’t bring themself to risk or challenge their beloved characters in any way. Don’t waste your credit here is you’re looking for sci-fi, adventure, or plot.

Great narrator, but the main character is dull and unlikable. Couldn't finish. Too much like homework.

Writing is amateurish, protagonist is a Mary Sue, villain is a cliche. Setting is good. Narration is good.

If you could sum up Men at Arms in three words, what would they be?

Terrific story. Note that the audio quality (commented on by other reviewers) seems to have been corrected.

What did you like best about this story?

Terrific narration by Nigel Planer, and of course a great story by Terry Pratchett.

Save your money and look elsewhere for entertainment. This "novel" was a series of cliches. Go for "First Wives Club" or "Snobs" or "People Like Us" or "Scruples". This was beyond awful. Tired plot, two-dimensional characters, and so many luxury brands mentioned, you'd think the author was paid for each product placement. Spare yourself the boredom.

Fabulous story, mediocre narrator

T.C. Boyle's "Drop City" is a wonderful novel, and one that benefits from being read aloud. The author's command of the language is both masterful and inventive. It is unfortunate that this mischievous, captivating tale is conveyed through a voice both rasping and nasal. (I ended up downloading the audiobook a second time, at a higher quality recording, in hopes this would be ameliorated). In addition, the narrator employs some decidedly odd pronunciations. Granted, T.C. Boyle has an extensive vocabulary - one of the joys of reading his work, in my opinion - but I don't think it is too much to ask that "banal" and "eschew" be pronounced correctly. In spite of all this, I recommend the audiobook.
