Story
It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Started Strong, Then Burned Out
Reviewed: 04-11-25
Slow Burn starts off pretty solid. Zed goes from someone with no real direction to a guy with purpose, and that early character growth kept me interested. The first two books actually show him developing in a meaningful way, but after that, things just stall out. Zed stops growing, and honestly, the story does too. It starts repeating itself, and by the time I hit book six and a half, I had to tap out.
There were already flaws before that point, but the repetition and super obvious twists just wore me down. On top of that, the writing quality slips. Characters feel more shallow, and the darker moments seem to be there purely for shock value rather than serving the story. If the characters had stayed strong or the storytelling kept its earlier momentum, maybe it would’ve been different—but it just didn’t hold up.

A Powerful and Hopeful Story Amid Tragedy
Reviewed: 10-17-24
This audiobook tackles a very heavy subject, and it’s understandably sad throughout. The writing is solid, avoiding the temptation to turn the story into a hero narrative or make any overt political statements. Instead, it focuses on the human experience. Despite the tragedy of a school shooting at its core, the epilogue manages to offer a sense of hope, which was a thoughtful touch. It was a powerful and well-executed listen, but due to the intense subject matter, it’s not something I’ll revisit anytime soon. Still, I’m glad I experienced it.

Story
The explosive conclusion to the Newsflesh trilogy from New York Times best seller Mira Grant - a saga of zombies, geeks, politics, social media, and the virus that runs through them all. The year was 2014. The year we cured cancer. The year we cured the common cold. And the year the dead started to walk. The year of the Rising. The year was 2039. The world didn't end when the zombies came, it just got worse. Georgia and Shaun Mason set out on the biggest story of their generation.

It’s a nice little short, not much to it. A good listen if you really have about thirty minutes. The performance is fine it’s not my favorite but it’s solid. The story is really nice though I really liked it.

Story
Shaun Mason is a man without a mission. Not even running the news organization he built with his sister has the same urgency as it used to. Playing with dead things just doesn't seem as fun when you've lost as much as he has. But when a CDC researcher fakes her own death and appears on his doorstep with a ravenous pack of zombies in tow, Shaun has a newfound interest in life. Because she brings news—he may have put down the monster who attacked them, but the conspiracy is far from dead. Now, Shaun hits the road to find what truth can be found at the end of a shotgun.

Like the first one I really liked this one, however I thought it was really strange late in the book when a character who has never said the F slur before just starts saying left and right.

Second try I Still Can’t Enjoy
Reviewed: 06-08-23
I realized I had already listened to The Complete Lee West Post-Apocalyptic once before but didn’t recall much about it. I also remembered not liking the ending, and this time, I couldn’t even finish the whole set. I made it through the first eleven hours. While the story itself is decent, the characters really brought it down for me. Most of them feel too similar, lacking the distinctiveness I look for, except for a couple of standout characters—one of which, a favorite of mine, was killed off.
I’m big on character development, and without a diverse and interesting cast, the story falls short.
(Spoiler ahead.)
The reason I stopped listening the second time around was the death of Brown, the most unique character with a point of view in the story. I was really looking forward to his redemption arc—seeing him make amends with the police and contribute after the main battle. But his death felt abrupt and unceremonious, leaving a sense of wasted potential that made me lose interest.

Story
The world crashed to pieces on June 23rd and Adrian Ring wasn't anywhere near ready for it. He had no guns, no food, no friends around, a cat that wanted to slip out the back of the condo and a girlfriend trapped in the heart of the city. This is the story of how he survived. Real, flawed, and raw, Dark Recollections is Adrian's own story of how he survived after "That Day". Told through his eyes as he talks to his laptop, affectionately named "Mr. Journal".

While I enjoyed it for the most part, I didn’t enjoy some of the writing, character traits, or that the character is just perfect for the apocalypse. However the character is enjoyable and so is the writing so while most of these stories about the guy who is ready for the apocalypse and survives it super well usually aggravate and bore me this kept me pretty interested and the narrator was perfect.
