A dark, gritty, beautifully written dystopian gem
Reviewed: 01-27-25
I absolutely devoured this book, and cannot believe I slept on it for so long. I love a good dark, dystopian tale, and this one had everything that I crave about this genre, and then some. The story was addictive-
I found myself sneaking chapters whenever I got the chance, and thinking about it when I wasn’t listening. The characters were so real and relatable, I truly felt connected to Khalani & Takeshi, and was fully invested in their journeys. The push and pull between them as prisoner and guard, as they built a deeper connection and found common ground, was absolutely beautiful. I could not get enough of these two, and cannot wait to see what happens in the next book.
There was action, angst, a bit of mystery to ferret out, and some plot twists that I absolutely did not see coming. This was a wild ride that I enjoyed immensely, and recommend to anyone who leans into the dismal, yet hopeful themes of the post apocalyptic genre.
I thought the narrator did a beautiful job, flowing seamlessly between characters, and adding depth to the story with her range of emotions.

Story
Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen's reservoirs for as long as she can remember. But a secret is like a knot. Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone. When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares… but it turns out they're real.

Phenomenal story, incredible duet performances

I absolutely loved this book when I read it earlier this year. I was so excited to do a reread with the highly anticipated audio, and I was not disappointed. The narrators truly brought the characters, and this captivating story to life, with their dynamic and nuanced performances. Their chemistry was off the charts. I was highly entertained from start to finish, and enjoyed the story even more this time around. 10 out of 10 recommend.

Story
I'm twenty-six years old, and I want to die. So when I wake up at the hospital with my brother weeping over me, I know my life is about to change. What I didn't expect was to get a nurse with cruel eyes and a morbid sense of humor that surpasses my own. I'm even more surprised when I arrive at Harlow Sanctum and realize that my brother selected an unorthodox rehabilitation center that rooms people based on their treatment plan. And my roommate is none other than the man with cruel eyes I met the day prior.

Emotional and engaging

4.5 ⭐️ for both story and performance.
This story was an emotional roller coaster from start to finish, and had me fully engaged from the first page. It wasn’t quite as dark as I thought it was going to be, but that’s likely because my scale is somewhat askew- I tend to read pitch black books with disturbing content. So this was more mild for me in terms of how dark it was, but there were some deep, emotionally heavy themes.
I love the cast of characters, and the dynamics between all of them. The romance was intoxicating, and the spice was perfect.
I thought the narrator did an amazing job, and I’m looking forward to diving into follow up book!

Dark and twisty Romantasy at its finest
Reviewed: 06-14-24
Why, oh WHY did I sleep on this for so long?? This story was every single thing that I crave in my fantasy books: it was dark, tragic, disturbing, mysterious, humorous, steamy, and spellbinding, all wrapped up in beautiful, elegant prose.
It had elements of Greek mythology, mixed with all matter of magical creatures, and a grim reaper FMC.
Throw in a love triangle, complete with 2 delicious MMCs, and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing till the end, and you have yourself a five star read that will stay with you for the foreseeable future. Can’t imagine I’ll be sleeping much while waiting for the next installment- cuz that ending… Absolutely genius.
The narrator did an EXCELLENT job, and kept me absolutely enthralled from beginning to end. Will definitely be on the lookout for more of her work.

Loved every single minute- cannot wait for the third book. This is one of the few single narration audiobooks where I think the female narrator does the male voices perfectly, and I will listen to anything that she narrates.
