I’ve been reading this series of books for 30 years and enjoy each of them for what the author is teaching, and what I learn.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Interesting universe but flat characters
Reviewed: 02-13-25
This came highly recommended from my sons, so I gave it a listen. I think I would have enjoyed it more as a physical book, so that I could use my own imagination for the voices. Everyone seemed to be the same character, as read by the narrator. Also there are a lot of characters and other things to remember, so being able to flip pages backwards would have been helpful.

Story
How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don’t understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.

I’ve always been scared to read a book like this
Reviewed: 06-12-24
I’ve always been scared to read a book like this because I have the beliefs that I have formed over a lifetime, inculcated by my society, culture, family, and environs. I thought a book like this would disprove my beliefs. But I was looking at it the wrong way. It really doesn’t matter if it does or doesn’t disprove anything I may believe, the things that I learn here are the things we need to know for life. For living here, on this earth, now, in all of our various abodes. It was absolutely, stunningly beautiful. Carl Sagan was an incredible human thinker.

Good narration, but some plot loopholes had me disbelieving

Performance was really good, the story was very interesting, but I couldn’t get past quite a few loopholes that resulted from various characters’ lack of critical thinking.

Fantastic listen and story
Reviewed: 10-03-23
I pre-ordered this when Audible told me it was available to, based on how much I loved the first book, story and narrator. With such a strong first novel I was worried how this one would go, but it is absolutely equal in every way. The author doesn’t rely on salaciousness or gore to sell, but on strong and thrilling writing. Keep this up, folks, and I’ll be buying every one she puts out. The narrator has a smooth and flexible voice, so capable with inflection, nuance, and accent, that I would like all my novels read by her, please.

Nothing about Emma Makepeace is real. Not even her name. A newly minted secret agent, Emma's barely graduated from basic training when she gets the call for her first major assignment. Eager to serve her country and prove her worth, she dives in headfirst. Emma must covertly travel across one of the world’s most watched cities to bring the reluctant—and handsome—son of Russian dissidents into protective custody, so long as the assassins from the Motherland don’t find him first.

Absolutely thrilled with this author
Reviewed: 09-04-22
After being suggested some highly rated but rather poorly written books within the Audible app, I tried a new idea and did an internet search for editor’s picks for novels, and found Alias Emma on it. Heading here, it had only a handful of high reviews, not thousands, but I bought it anyway. SO very glad I did, enough to actually write a review.
It is a spy-mystery thriller from the perspective of Emma Makepiece, a new British spy, and passes through the thrilling and harrowing events of a day or two. It feels better than James Bond: accessible and intriguing while still being fast-paced. No needless dwelling on violence or bloodlust (or any kind of lust).
This is all-around a novel written exceedingly well. I really want everyone to discover this author for themselves. Please please, Ava Glass, give us more of these characters.
The narrator so thoroughly has the voice and personality of each of the characters that I want to hear everything read by her, never tiring of her voice or thinking she got it wrong—so talented.

I listened to all of the episodes and would highly recommend this to anyone who is old enough to remember the events as they unfolded or not. I have a whole new appreciation for those tasked with untangling the threads to find those responsible. The narrator was fantastic and snips of interviews instead of reading quotes brought it to life. Parts will get your pulse racing, your mind thinking, and your heart reaching out to those affected.
