Story
Who is Audrey Hoedemaker? It's a question her sister Maureen has heard more times than she can count, and she doesn't know what the short answer would be. Little sister, troubled teen, backpacker, musical theatre coach, con artist, childcare worker. Murderer. A tragic, traumatic childhood casts a long shadow on the Hoedemaker sisters. Maureen has worked hard to move beyond the violence of the past and build a good, honest life for herself. Audrey, however, just can't seem to do the same, careening from one state of chaos to another.

Heart wrenching story of child neglect and abuse and the long term damage it causes. I really did not expect the ending.

I loved the books by Neal Stephenson that I’ve read (yes, paper) in the past. The description for this one does not prepare you for the weird departures from the storyline. I could not get through it. Now, I will not be so excited about the next Stephenson that I see. Maybe his older work is what I fell in love with—not sure. The narrator was excellent.

Story
Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of 13 dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day, to whisk him away on a journey "there and back again". They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

Wow! Andy Serkis is brilliant!
Reviewed: 09-17-24
There are a few very good narrators, but professional actors bring something extra to the reading of a book. Engaging Andy Serkis to read the Hobbit was genius. Not only is he the voice of Gollum from the motion pictures but his voice characterizations made me think there was more than one narrator. And he sings the songs wonderfully! I’m so glad I listened to this recording. It was sheer delight.

Story
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

I listen to this story amazed at some of the similarities to my own life. No, I don’t look like a movie star and never stood in for one or even really met one. Saw Andie McDowell at a small airport once but was too chicken to approach her. I’m not Chinese or biracial, but the conversations and circumstances around Gracie’s mom even some of the mom’s story was uncomfortably similar to my own mom’s that it hurt to remember. My mom passed away in 2010. She was suffering with dementia towards the end, and I miss the person she was before her mind and body failed her. This story brought back the sadness and regrets of that period in my life. On the bright side was the sweet success, friendships and love that Gracie found.

Story
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

Isla Crown has secured the love of two powerful rulers and broken the curses that plagued the six realms for centuries, but few know the true origins of her powers. Now, in the wake of a crushing betrayal, Isla finds herself hungry for distraction, preferring to frequent Lightlark’s seductive haunts instead of embracing her duties as the newly crowned leader of two separate realms. Worse, her fellow rulers haven’t ceded victory quietly, and there are others in Isla’s midst who don’t believe her ascent to power was earned.

Ugh! Nympho alert
Reviewed: 07-03-24
I enjoyed the first book but thought it was a YA story and was surprised by the level of erotica. This one doubles down on the erotic so much that it detracts from the flimsy story. Isla becomes a foolish, pathetic character with which I could no longer sympathize. The back and forth between the “memories” and current day is tired and became tiresome. The ending weak and unsatisfying. I’ll never get back the time I wasted.
