Story
Paint your toes. Pick up the wrong coffee and bagel order. Drive from Brooklyn to Jersey in traffic so slow you want to tear your hair out. It’s amazing all the useless things I can accomplish while on hold for three hours with customer service. Three hours when I should be getting the Date-in-a-Box website ready to launch at the big business expo in a few days. Except my shiny new website is glitching, and my inner rage-monster is ready to scorch some earth...when he finally picks up. Not the robot voice I expected but a real live human named Kal.

Story
The story opens in 1906 in New Rochelle, New York, at the home of an affluent American family. One lazy Sunday afternoon, the famous escape artist Harry Houdini swerves his car into a telephone pole outside their house. And almost magically, the line between fantasy and historical fact, between real and imaginary characters, disappears.

I listened to the first 8 chapters. Seemed more like a text book than a Novel. I’m sure there was a storyline there somewhere, but I had a hard time finding it. I finally just gave up. It might be a great book, but it’s not for me.

In the beginning, the story was very strange and I wasn’t sure that I was gonna be able to get into it but after listening just a little more I found I couldn’t leave it. The interwoven lives and the search for the main character to find out what was going on in her lifewas great. The ending was super.

In a small back alley of Tokyo, there is a café that has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than 100 years. Local legend says that this shop offers something else besides coffee - the chance to travel back in time. Over the course of one summer, four customers visit the café in the hopes of making that journey. But time travel isn’t so simple, and there are rules that must be followed. Most important, the trip can last only as long as it takes for the coffee to get cold.

Culture differences
Reviewed: 11-19-24
I chose this big because of a New York Times article about this type of comfort book becoming popular and this one was a best seller.
I was disappointed in the characters who seemed self indulgent and at the same time reticent. Once they had the privilege of time travel, they never seemed to know what to say or day. That’s is where the Japanese culture does not translate well to our American way of thinking.
