Story
The instant bestselling story of Lee Mackenzie, who was a capable and confident young woman, studying broadcast journalism and honing her skills of observation and objectivity. She was also a little unworldly, the product of a small, rural Western Canadian community where doors were never locked and life was simple and direct. On a backpacking trip in the UK, she met the man who would become her husband. A man who everyone agreed was one of the most intelligent, charming people they had ever met.

Gripping story

I could easily imagine myself at a young and innocent stage of my life falling prey to someone in the same way. That made her story all the more gripping.

Story
When Chris McDougall agreed to take in a donkey from an animal hoarder, he thought it would be no harder than the rest of the adjustments he and his family had made after moving from Philadelphia to the heart of Pennsylvania Amish country. But when he arrived, Sherman was in such bad shape he could barely move, and his hair was coming out in clumps. Chris decided to undertake a radical rehabilitation program designed not only to heal Sherman's body but to heal his mind as well - and so Chris decided to teach Sherman how to run.

This book was a joy to listen to

I loved this book from the first moments. The author, Christopher MacDougall, was telling the story with his own voice, and you could hear the emotions he felt about Sherman and all of those who worked with him to bring Sherman back to health and then on to a happy life with his people and donkey friends. Preparing for the race took enormous effort and time, with many successes and set backs, and even in the last moments it was sheer determination that helped all of them to cross the finish line. I laughed at many points and felt sad at other moments, but overall it was a joy to listen to Sherman’s story.

A valuable history pertinent to our times

I really appreciated the many stories shared in this book. Whatever the country of origin, Asian Americans have had challenges in their assimilation due to racist perceptions that have been perpetuated in news media, historical records ( and lack thereof) as well as cinema. One comes away from this reading appreciating the contributions made by Asian Americans and the importance of making certain their stories are heard and known.

A funny novel that definitely keeps your attention!

The characters are nuts, the situations are completely implausible but hilarious, the pace is nonstop action, the tension at some moments is real enough to be creepy scary, but always there follow other moments provoking laughter and shaking one’s head at the utter outrageousness of the situation at hand. In short, it’s a funny book and will entertain the intelligent reader in a manner similar to the enjoyment felt at watching Shriner’s clowns drive madly around in their little cars during a parade.
