Story
Frederick Fife was born with an extra helping of kindness in his heart. If he borrowed your car, he’d return it washed with a full tank of gas. The problem is there’s nobody left in Fred’s life to borrow from. At eighty-two, he’s desperately lonely, broke, and on the brink of homelessness. But Fred’s luck changes when, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, he takes the place of grumpy Bernard Greer at the local nursing home. Now he has warm meals in his belly and a roof over his head—as long as his poker face is in better shape than his prostate and that his look-alike never turns up.

Excellent narrator. Interesting story development. Wonderful characters. Warm, humorous takes on some of the hardships of life… loss of loved ones, dementia, aging, addiction.

Story
Lila Mae Watson - the first black female inspector in the world's tallest city - has the highest performance rating of anyone in the Department of Elevator Inspectors. This upsets her superiors, because Lila is an Intuitionist: she inspects elevators simply by the feelings she gets riding in them. When a brand new elevator crashes, Lila becomes caught in the conflict between her Intuitionist methods and the beliefs of the power-holding Empiricists.

Story
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Fantastic weaving
Reviewed: 10-08-23
The wonderful, fully developed characters in this novel are woven together in an incredible story. My only negative comment is that sometimes in dialogue it was difficult to discern who was speaking. Even after rewinding and carefully listening several times. However, this was such an incredible listen that I plan to read the book again in print. However, the Audible version is WONDERFUL.

Brunhild was a foreign princess, raised to be married off for the sake of alliance-building. Her sister-in-law Fredegund started out as a lowly palace slave. And yet - in sixth-century Merovingian France, where women were excluded from noble succession and royal politics was a blood sport - these two iron-willed strategists reigned over vast realms, changing the face of Europe.

An entertaining, educational account of these two magnificent ladies. It gives an interesting perspective on how history can be and has been changed by historians with ulterior motives. The intrigues and cruelties of this period are quite astonishing. And the descriptions of how the lines of royalty are maintained is very eye-opening.

The title explains a lot about this book! In addition, the reader learns various aspects of Punjabi culture. Arranged marriages are examined from various perspectives. There are stories of close relationships, strong friendships and interesting twists. Both humorous and poignant. An excellent book to listen to as the various accents are delightfully enunciated.

Interesting but too religious
Reviewed: 05-10-23
This is a very interesting historical novel. I learned a lot about the Mormon religion, the journeys Mormons undertook to Salt Lake City and the thorny interactions between Mormons and the Federal government. I’d never heard that some compared polygamy to slavery. I did not enjoy the overtly religious sections… the visions, etc.

Narrator difficulties
Reviewed: 12-26-22
I am enjoying this series very much. However, this narrator made listening difficult. He would speak at one volume when reading quotes and then lower his voice for asides or for words that identified the speaker. I frequently had to rewind and adjust the volume to catch important information. This obviously made listening more like work. I will continue with this series, but if Perring is the narrator, I will read rather than listen.

I found the story interesting but the extraneous details added to what the various characters were thinking in times of danger distracting and annoying. I thought the ending came too suddenly as though written with a deadline looming. The “bad guys” were disgustingly bad.

A very grim story of the lives of Arab women who are married off young and are treated as chattel by their fathers and husbands. And, sadly, by their mothers as well. The redundancy and deadly boredom of the lives of these women are reflected by the redundancy and boredom of the language used to write the book. It is an eye-opening perspective of the lives of millions of women and girls in this world. And it is not happy.
