Story
The accident came quickly. With no warning. In the dead of night, a precipitous plunge into a freezing river trapped everyone inside the bus. It was then that Army veteran John Reiff’s life came to an end. Extinguished in the sudden rush of frigid water. There was no expectation of survival. None. Let alone waking up beneath blinding hospital lights. Struggling to move, or see, or even breathe. But the doctors assure him that everything is normal. That things will improve. What they haven’t told him… is that he is the first person to be successfully revived from a cryonic sleep.

Characters repeating themselves is annoying
Reviewed: 01-28-24
The story has potential.
The narrator is solid.
The dialog is annoying as the characters constantly repeat themselves and other characters.
"What do you mean?"
"What do YOU mean?"
"I'm not sure what you mean...."
"You would know what I mean, if you had listened. "
*What do you mean? "
This pads the length of the text unnecessarily, this book would be better if cut by half.

Jones is vile, a dangerous charlatan and a piece of exploitative trash. He needs to be be gone from all platforms.

Story
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

The narrator is perfect.

OK, so I read all the negative comments about the narrator, but gave the sample a listen, and bought the book. I have no regrets. The story is great and the narrator nailed the tone and pov of the protagonist perfectly.

I always love Blaylock's ability to craft a great story with interesting characters - the protagonist is always interesting and the bad guy, damn creepy and Edmond is super creepy!

In late 2003, in his column in Entertainment Weekly, Stephen King called The Memory of Running "the best novel you won't read this year." This glowing endorsement of the audiobook resulted in Ron McLarty receiving a $2 million two-book deal from Viking Penguin. Also, Warner Brothers has shelled out big bucks for the movie rights to The Memory of Running, for which McLarty will write the script.

I just finished this book; great story, and great narrator. The story was sad, smart, funny, and thought provoking. It was the kind of story that you want to keep a pen around to jot down a thought. Ron?s talent for doing different characters really shined. I?m going to look for more books narrated by him.
