About this listen

This program is read by multi-award-winning narrator Scott Brick.

From the bestselling author of the Breakthrough series: In his next near-future thriller, Michael C. Grumley explores humanity’s thirst for immortality—at any cost...

“A fast-paced juggernaut of a story, where revelations pile upon revelations, building to a stunning conclusion that will leave readers clamoring for more.”—James Rollins, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Sigma Force series

The accident came quickly. With no warning. In the dead of night, a precipitous plunge into a freezing river trapped everyone inside the bus. It was then that Army veteran John Reiff’s life came to an end. Extinguished in the sudden rush of frigid water.

There was no expectation of survival. None. Let alone waking up beneath blinding hospital lights. Struggling to move, or see, or even breathe. But the doctors assure him that everything is normal. That things will improve. And yet, he has a strange feeling that there's something they're not telling him.

As Reiff's mind and body gradually recover, he becomes certain that the doctors are lying to him. One by one, puzzle pieces are slowly falling into place, and he soon realizes that things are not at all what they seem. Critical information is being kept from him. Secrets. Supposedly for his own good. But who is doing this? Why? And the most important question: can he keep himself alive long enough to uncover the truth?

Critic reviews

“A propelling story that seizes the reader from the opening and doesn’t let go until the last shocking sentence. John Reiff, revived from the dead, is given a second chance at life, only to realize that something is very, very wrong… and he embarks on a quest to find the truth. A truly gripping read—I highly recommend it.” —Douglas Preston, #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of the Pendergast series

“A fast-paced juggernaut of a story, where revelations pile upon revelations, building to a stunning conclusion that will leave readers clamoring for more. It has everything I love in a story: fascinating scientific speculation, hellbent action, and characters you’ll be rooting for with every turn of the page. Not to be missed!” —James Rollins, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Sigma Force series

“A fast-paced thriller for mystery and techno-thriller readers, Grumley’s novel draws on speculative technology to forecast the dark side of scientific advancement and medical ethics.” Library Journal

Yes, yes indeed

Such a interesting way to start a new series. We appreciated so much not only the concepts presented, but also the moral conflicts generated by not questioning the ramifcations of choices made.

The possibility that this could happen.

Too many characters to keep track of. No epilogue telling what happened. Too many loose ends.

The pursuit of ever lasting life.

The advancements in technology around the human condition were highlighted throughly the story. The twist of realizing the world they were living had been for ever changed by the conditions that exist in our world today. Overall, a great read that is enhanced with the audio narrator.

Innovative concept and writing

The best novels are creative , fiction with a ton of just flat out factual information. This book has it all

Johns story is quite interesting

Honestly had a James Bond Feel. Secret facilities, bad A$$ Vets, and the destroy and shooting scenes. The ending could have been better, but if their are more books then it could lead to some good reading. The capuchin monkey makes me think of Dexter from the Echo series

Narration

Didn't end, just kinda stopped. Felt it needed more conclusion. The story didn't exain what happened to John... Just said he is stable. Why? What was different?

Made me think

Would eternal life really be desirable here on Earrh?
Maybe not so much. Going forward or back not so enticing either

Like Jules Verne

What is fantasy now may become reality in the future...like the space travel or leagues under the sea. I love Michael Grumley's way of weaving fiction and reality into a smooth story that makes a believer out of the reader. This was a worthwhile book to pour through and think about the scientific, ethical, political, humanistic and other implications. The characters are well crafted and there are no 'holes' in the plot - it is a very satisfying listen if you enjoy the chance to ponder the forces and people who influence and shape the future. Grumley gets better and better!
