About this listen

This program is read by multi-award-winning narrator Scott Brick.

From the bestselling author of the Breakthrough series: In his next near-future thriller, Michael C. Grumley explores humanity’s thirst for immortality—at any cost...

“A fast-paced juggernaut of a story, where revelations pile upon revelations, building to a stunning conclusion that will leave readers clamoring for more.”—James Rollins, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Sigma Force series

The accident came quickly. With no warning. In the dead of night, a precipitous plunge into a freezing river trapped everyone inside the bus. It was then that Army veteran John Reiff’s life came to an end. Extinguished in the sudden rush of frigid water.

There was no expectation of survival. None. Let alone waking up beneath blinding hospital lights. Struggling to move, or see, or even breathe. But the doctors assure him that everything is normal. That things will improve. And yet, he has a strange feeling that there's something they're not telling him.

As Reiff's mind and body gradually recover, he becomes certain that the doctors are lying to him. One by one, puzzle pieces are slowly falling into place, and he soon realizes that things are not at all what they seem. Critical information is being kept from him. Secrets. Supposedly for his own good. But who is doing this? Why? And the most important question: can he keep himself alive long enough to uncover the truth?

Critic reviews

“A propelling story that seizes the reader from the opening and doesn’t let go until the last shocking sentence. John Reiff, revived from the dead, is given a second chance at life, only to realize that something is very, very wrong… and he embarks on a quest to find the truth. A truly gripping read—I highly recommend it.” —Douglas Preston, #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of the Pendergast series

“A fast-paced juggernaut of a story, where revelations pile upon revelations, building to a stunning conclusion that will leave readers clamoring for more. It has everything I love in a story: fascinating scientific speculation, hellbent action, and characters you’ll be rooting for with every turn of the page. Not to be missed!” —James Rollins, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Sigma Force series

“A fast-paced thriller for mystery and techno-thriller readers, Grumley’s novel draws on speculative technology to forecast the dark side of scientific advancement and medical ethics.” Library Journal

The story was outstanding

The turns in the story kept you interested. The author kept you guessing at every turn.

The circle of life.

It took me half way through the audible to try and figure what kind apocalypse had occurred and how the human story related to that human disaster. The events occurred in Northern Arizona in an area that I was familiar with and that kept me hanging in there.

Starts with a bang and continues!

Imagination is it! I really enjoyed Grumley's implementation. He sells this concept as a real possibility! I had a hard time putting it down.

Story didn't freeze me out.

Michael wrote another show stopper. How he comes up with these ideas, I don't know. And Scott is as great as ever.

Creative storey with current politics in the rear view.

Is it sci-fi? Well, in part with consistent characters and a pace that kept me engaged. Even the lab animals were animated. Good guys vs bad guys was over shadowed by the characters' themselves. Worthwhile read.

Brilliant!

With Scott Brick as the narrator and a review by James Rollins, I knew this would be a good book. The complex plot and unforeseen twists kept me hooked up to the last page. I look forward to reading more of his books!

Slow Controlled Burn

As with typical Grumley style, this story is very imaginative, well written, researched and thought out.
It kind of had a slow start but picked up nicely halfway through.
As always, Scott Brick did an exemplary job narrating the book. He is truly a master of his craft
It's a good enough story but it lacks the organic spark, intrigue and allure of Book 1 of his Breakthrough series.
I appreciate the cautionary tale of our current culture and the potential outcome and dark future that will ensue if there is no course correction.

I hope there is a sequel

A very interesting story. There is room for more. I hope the story continues. As good as the story was, I still have questions. What about The Houstons? Who was Duchik working for? What were the ultimate plans?
